Overview

:

The Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS) will be part of a team responsible for the optimal integration of health information technology (HIT) and clinical care. This role will include facilitating intake requests for new services or products, optimization of clinical applications, assessment of clinical workflows as well as shepherding healthcare data to improve the quality of patient care, clinical outcomes, and workflow efficiency. While a strong background HIT is helpful, the Clinical Informatics Specialist role is not focused on technology. Instead, the CIS will act as a liaison between clinical staff and the Clinical Applications teams to ensure that healthcare technology systems are integrated and utilized effectively. In addition, the Clinical Informatics Specialist will assist with educational initiatives in areas of electronic health record (EHR) utilization, data reporting, and other areas where technology and clinical care intersect.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with clinical staff and physicians to solve immediate and long-term problems and enhance system and staff functions.
  • The CIS will align with information technology (IT) and clinical operations to operationalize changes that improve clinical workflow associated with the EHR.
  • The CIS will collaborate with Informatics leadership to improve caregiver satisfaction with the EHR, promote "voice of the customer" and improve collaboration and user experience with IT systems and support.
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement in clinical processes and workflow
  • At times, the CIS may be responsible for communicating EHR changes to caregivers and customizing content to support clinical workflow.
  • Serving as a liaison between clinical staff and IT teams to ensure effective integration and utilization of healthcare technology systems
  • Collaborating on project teams throughout the system life cycle
  • The CIS will regularly perform rounds to gain insight into informatics service in context.
  • Participating in reviews for EHR releases/updates/upgrades to determine the impact on clinicians and workflows
  • The CIS will collaborate with nursing, physician and key service line leaders to promote the adoption of clinical applications and meet clinical and IT performance metrics through the effective use of data and reporting.

The incumbent must have excellent communication skills and be comfortable engaging with a wide range of internal constituents from staff, peers, and Senior Executives across the Enterprise.

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Required Experience: 2 years of relevant clinical healthcare experience. Experience with healthcare information systems is a plus. Ideally, the candidate will have experience with the development, implementation, and support of information services. The candidate should also have a working knowledge of, or the strong willingness to learn, the healthcare system’s vendors and their product offerings. The CIS should appreciate the benefits of information systems that extend beyond technology to the improvement and re-engineering of clinical processes and be able to help realize those benefits. The role will require a capacity to balance information systems requirements within resource constraints. This will include working with Senior Management to prioritize and revise plans on a regular basis, managing resources judiciously, and operating within budget. Finally, the individual should be committed to educating and empowering all users of information systems.

Skills/Competencies

  • Able to provide leadership and promote change in a positive manner that supports all employees
  • Able to communicate effectively and partner with nursing, project management, IT, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others to achieve desired outcomes
  • Ability to translate business or clinical processes into requirements for a technical solution.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice and clinical practice standards
  • Able to assist users of all levels in the best use of information systems
  • Able to prepare and deliver reports and presentations
  • Able to independently seek out resources and solve complex problems even under stressful situations
  • Able to use and learn new software programs
  • Able to apply knowledge of adult learning theory
  • Able to organize multiple work streams, prioritize work efforts, and remain focused
