** This position is eligible for a temporary $4.00 per hour shift differential for all hours worked. This differential is only temporary and can end at the Governors discretion at any time.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

The Kansas Soldiers Home, a state veteran home located at Fort Dodge, is currently seeking a Chaplain to provide religious or spiritual guidance to residents of the home. This position is a 999-hour temporary position, with very flexible hours.


: As the Chaplain, you will:

  • Lead and coordinate religious study discussions to residents of the Kansas Soldiers Home weekly,
  • Coordinate with activities director various group activities for residents that provide stimulation, amusement, and cheerfulness,
  • Provide pastoral counseling to residents in Cottages, Halsey and Lincoln Hall,
  • Participate in Fort Dodge activities as a member of the facility providing pastoral insight and influence to the various committees, ceremonies and events.
  • Plan and coordinate memorial services for residents at the Kansas Soldiers’ Home or at the Fort Dodge Cemetery at the request of family members or as a pre-determined burial request,
  • Provide bereavement sessions for residents,
  • Plan and coordinate nondenominational religious Chapel services for residents of the Kansas Soldiers’ Home,

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively communicate. Ability to function effectively under stress. Ability to relate to residents with empathy and understanding and to maintain a caring attitude.
  • To be successful, the expectation is that a candidate will be able to competently perform the routine tasks of the position with limited supervision by the end of the probation period. Ability to attend work regularly as scheduled.
    • Knowledge of 1) the living habits, attitudes, and interests of institutionalized persons, 2) spiritual needs and problems of institutionalized persons, 3) a variety of religious backgrounds, and 4) counseling methods and techniques.
    • Ability to 1) direct and conduct activities that promote the spiritual development of institutionalized persons, 2) utilize initiative and judgment in developing and implementing a religious program in an institutional setting, 3) conduct religious services, 4) establish and maintain harmonious relationships with administrative officials and other staff, patients and their families and the general public, 5) supervise, and 6) deal with the spiritual needs and problems of the residents

  • Ability to 1) direct and conduct activities that promote the spiritual development of institutionalized persons, 2) utilize initiative and judgment in developing and implementing a religious program in an institutional setting, 3) conduct religious services, 4) establish and maintain harmonious relationships with administrative officials and other staff, patients and their families and the general public, 5) supervise, and 6) deal with the spiritual needs and problems of the residents
  • Education, training, and/or experience that is recognized by a particular religion, faith, or belief system as qualifying a person to provide religious or spiritual guidance and to conduct services or rituals in that religion, faith or belief system.
  • Knowledge of 1) the living habits, attitudes, and interests of institutionalized persons, 2) spiritual needs and problems of institutionalized persons, 3) a variety of religious backgrounds, and 4) counseling methods and techniques.

  • Must successfully pass background check as required by K.S.A. 39-970.
  • As authorized by the 2018 Kansas Legislature, effective July 1, 2018, K.S.A. 75-4362 is amended to designate all positions with the Kansas Commission on Veterans’ Affairs office, to include both the Kansas Soldiers’ Home and Kansas Veterans’ Home as Safety Sensitive positions and subject to the drug testing program. All applicants with a conditional offer of employment on or after July 1, 2018, shall be required to submit to a drug screening test.
