If so, we're looking for someone like you to join the Editorial team in the Communications Department at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). We're seeking a talented, creative, highly effective individual to join our team as a Technical Editor. As a member of the team, you will join a staff of dedicated professionals in the area of publications.

As a Technical Editor you will...

  • Input and format text, tables, and graphics.
  • Edit classified and unclassified technical reports and other diverse communications materials for organization, grammar, usage, and clarity.
  • Interact with teammates, artists, project managers, authors, and other partners, both in person and virtually, to define project requirements and resolve content, production, and scheduling issues.
  • Follow security classification guidelines, as directed by program requirements.
  • Follow internal and program-specific style guides while editing and formatting.
  • Build and implement page layouts and templates.

Qualifications


You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have ...

  • 3+ years of demonstrated ability editing formal publications and technical documents for organization, grammar, usage, and clarity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience following an editorial style guide.
  • A bachelor's degree in English, language arts, or other related technical subject area.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • A proven ability to manage multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously with an eye for prioritization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including implementing document templates.
  • Experience formatting documents using paragraph and character styles.

You 'll go above and beyond the minimum requirements if you have...

  • Proficiency with formatting and editing in PowerPoint.
  • Experience with advanced features in Word, including using fields, macros, cross-referencing, and outline numbering for sophisticated, multi-file documents.
  • Proficiency building and maintaining document templates in Microsoft Word.
  • Project management experience with large editorial documents or complex document workflows.
  • Knowledge of or experience with HTML, XML, LaTeX, or other markup language.
  • An active Secret or higher level security clearance.
  • Experience in classified document marking and handling.
  • Experience in a publishing environment using software other than Word.
  • An affiliation with a professional editing association or community.
  • Familiarity with multiple style guides, such as GPO, AP, and the Chicago Manual of Style, and experience creating custom guides.
  • Experience with document accessibility, such as 508 compliance.
  • Experience with Adobe FrameMaker.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
