The Safety and Security (S&S) office is a 24-7 operation with front desk support/dispatchers working during College business hours. The uniformed team of Safety and Security consists of a diverse team of, led by a Campus Security Lieutenant. Safety and Security strides for professionalism and ethics, practicing team-oriented concepts in our daily duties.

The College supports the safety and training of Campus Security Officers through the following mechanisms:

  • S&S provides a locker, portable radio, and Streamlight Stinger flashlight for use during patrol shifts.
  • All uniformed personnel are provided with one duty belt, note taking materials, PPE (nitrile gloves, face masks), and OC spray once certified. All other patrol equipment, if authorized, must be provided by officer (ASP baton, handcuffs, belt/MOLLE additions).
  • S&S maintains an ongoing working relationship with both Shoreline Police and the Shoreline Fire Department, the former of which regularly trains on campus providing officers with an opportunity to observe/connect.
  • All uniformed personnel are issued a uniform of tops, pants, jacket, cap, boots and exterior body armor, including several MOLLE attachment slots. The current issued vest is the Safariland Oregon City and Bothell carrier systems with level IIIA Kevlar. Vests are also equipped with reflective back patches to help identify you as Campus Security and differentiate you from law enforcement.
  • All uniformed personnel receive annual NARCAN training from the Shoreline Fire Department and are issued a personal dose with other doses staged and ready for emergency situations.
  • S&S maintains two fully marked Police Interceptor Utilities, outfitted with emergency lights, siren, and a PA system. Each vehicle contains a laptop for mobile report writing.

The Campus Security Officer will be responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing college/state rules, regulations, laws, and policies. Emergency procedures and security requirements performed by the Officer provides safe access to campus (for students, staff, faculty, and visitors), as well as assistance in medical emergencies and various services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Respond to accidents/vehicle crimes, gather evidence/photos, locate witnesses, complete incident reports
  • Respond to medical emergencies, calls for assistance or service, and reports (of theft, assault, fire and burglar alarms), administer first aid as needed
  • Enforce state laws within campus jurisdiction and parking regulations (based on WAC), issue citations, assist with traffic control and flow, provide directions to students
  • Perform occasional outdoor tasks such as installing traffic signs, snow removal, battery jump-starts, unlocking car doors, and minor vehicle problem troubleshooting
  • Provide security escorts for various departments/events including financially-related transactions
  • Perform other duties as assigned of a similar nature and level
  • Provide campus surveillance via vehicle/foot patrol for irregularities (i.e. damage, fire, prowlers, etc.), lock/unlock buildings

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years of full-time college education in police science or allied field OR two (2) years of police or campus security experience OR combination of experience and education (i.e. military experience)
  • High school graduate or equivalent

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Washington State driver's license; clean driving record (maximum of one [1] moving violation in the last twelve [12] months), no suspension/revocation of license (for reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, failure to appear, DUI, or other vehicle-related felony in the last five [5] years)
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification OR ability to obtain upon offer of employment
  • No previous felony convictions

NOTE: If selected for an interview, you will be required to submit a current driving abstract (no more than one [1] month old) to meet the licensing requirement.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Operation and experience with a hand-held radio
  • Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word programs
  • Use and operation of surveillance/security systems, burglar alarms, and fire suppression systems
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) governing access to building/grounds and rules of behavior
  • Incident Command Systems (ICS 100 & ICS 200)
  • General safety precautions and fire hazards, first aid, and law enforcement basics

SKILLED IN:

  • Ability to problem solve and use de-escalation skills to reach a desired outcome in various situations
  • Writing/editing/proofreading clear and concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication with individuals inside and/or outside of the College
  • Handling volatile situations involving irate individuals, and remaining calm in emergency situations
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner
  • Observing and detecting suspicious situations, meeting emergencies, and employing effective courses of action
  • Operating department vehicles in a safe and legal manner
  • Ability to be impartial to discern situations without bias
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
  • Maintaining confidentiality and composure in an office or outdoor setting with frequent in-person interactions

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The Campus Security Officer generally works without direct supervision, and has regular contact with College staff, students, and campus visitors. It is essential to be able to meet the physical demands of walking/standing (indoors and outdoors) and sitting in/driving a patrol car for prolonged periods of time. The physical ability to perform outdoor tasks such as working in inclement weather both on foot and in a vehicle, crouch and lift up to 50 lbs., installing traffic signs, snow removal, battery jump-starts, unlocking car doors, and minor vehicle problem troubleshooting is required. Other requirements include ability to meet the physical demands of sitting for periods of time at a desk/computer workstation, and using repetitive arm, hand and finger movements. In this position you will also be required to respond to emergency situations that include but are not limited to performing CPR, assisting in building evacuations, and being involved in physical altercations with violent persons. You are also required to wear your body armor and gear for the duration of your shift while outside of the Campus Security Office.

Conditions of Employment

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
This position is allocated to pay range 46, under the Washington State Office of Financial Management higher education salary schedule. Salary placement for new employees is determined by the College. This position works 40 hours per week, with schedule dependent upon department needs. Hiring of this position is contingent on available funding as determined by the College President.
