Job Description
The Crisis Clinician position is responsible for ensuring exceptional customer service and clinical care to any community member making contact with the Access Center or requiring intervention in the community. This position is responsible for providing timely and clinically appropriate screenings and or crisis interventions, by phone or face-to-face, that adheres to the standards of LifeWays, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Access Standards, Medicaid Provider Manual, and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This position requires the ability to foster positive engagement with consumers that will assist them in their path to recovery.
Essential Functions
  • Participates in case consult with consumer's treatment team.
  • Provides screening for inpatient hospitalization and/or diversion services and authorize placement in accordance with medical necessity for adults and children.
  • Provide trauma sensitive and recovery focused crisis interventions, including mobile crisis services, in the community. Promote engagement of consumers with crisis services and after care treatment through Crisis Mobile services. Responsible for driving LifeWays vehicle in accordance to guidelines to transport consumers. Travel is required and generally occurs in Jackson and Hillsdale counties, but travel within the State of Michigan may be necessary.
  • Responsible for adherence to all Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) standards.
  • Assist with Outpatient Therapy Services, as needed.
  • Maintains productivity standards relative to the requirements of the position.
  • Provide crisis support services to consumers in contracted residential treatment settings.
  • Responsible for having current knowledge of provider network, community resources, insurance eligibility, medical necessity criteria, County of Financial Responsibility (COFR), and all Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) standards and applying this for referral decisions.
  • Responsible for working closely with provider network staff, hospital staff, and natural supports to develop clinically sound diversion and safety planning when appropriate.
  • Responsible for ensuring coordination both internally and externally for all consumers referred in a timely manner.
  • Work a non-traditional schedule which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Responsible for having a working knowledge of Medicaid Provider Manual as well as the LifeWays provider manual.
  • Provides assistance in monitoring the waiting list and performing follow-up calls.
  • Provide screenings face to face or via telephone to determine if risk factors exist to warrant a full evaluation for Community Mental Health services and full intake evaluation as needed. Facilitates referrals based on clinical assessment and medical necessity.
  • Provides assistance with completing summary of visit follow up calls and follow up support for consumers who did not attend scheduled appointments with LifeWays.
  • Provide clinically and culturally competent interventions determining if further referral or a higher level of intervention is required and ensuring the person is successfully linked to those services.
  • Responsible for documenting all relevant information regarding consumer treatment in electronic medical record.
  • Provides intake assessments for consumers who are not currently open to LifeWays services.
Education/Certification/Licensure
  • Masters' degree in human service field required.
  • LifeWays vehicles are provided to employees for the purpose of transporting consumers; employees must possess a valid MI motor vehicle operator's license and verification of an acceptable driving record. Personal vehicles may be used for company business when drivers meet the following; valid MI motor vehicle operator's license and proof of personal vehicle insurance in accordance to guideline.
  • Must have reliable transportation*
  • Mental Health First Aid Training, upon hire.
  • Appropriate licensure with the State of Michigan, required.
  • CPI non-violent Crisis Intervention training, upon hire.
  • Credentialing requirements for ongoing clinical privileges with LifeWays.
