Job Summary


As a direct report to the UK Enterprise CIO (UK CIO ) and SVP /Chief Operations Officer for UK HealthCare, the Chief Digital and Information Officer ( CDIO ) will lead digital and information technology matters for UK HealthCare ( UKHC ) with responsibility for leadership and oversight of the UKHC IT team. The CDIO will be a collaborative and strategic leader who will serve as chief strategist and visionary for comprehensive information technology planning and implementation within UK HealthCare with a growing focus on digital health, data management, and the application of technology solutions within our health care environment. This leader will be asked to serve as a change agent for digital health technologies, in addition to providing strategic leadership and overall operational oversight and accountability for all IT services at UK HealthCare. This Executive leader will develop and execute strategies that optimize and transform care delivery models in the clinician-patient experience through the smart use of the electronic health record, digital tools, advanced technologies, services, and processes. The CDIO will maintain key relationships with clinical leadership, College of Medicine department chairs, deans/IT staff within the other health profession colleges, and other key stakeholders at UK. The CDIO will work across the University of Kentucky (UK) enterprise to ultimately enhance customer service and support, produce efficiencies and more collaboration, and mitigate one of our largest institutional risks, cybersecurity.

Key Responsibilities


  • Plan, execute and maintain a system framework for Policy, Procedures, and standards governing the practices of Information Technology within UK HealthCare, and UK as a whole.
  • Oversee the prioritization, planning, and execution of strategic and critical tactical projects in UKHC to ensure that they meet the objectives and priorities of the strategic plan and be a champion for all strategic IT projects as prioritized by leadership.
  • Collaborate with the leadership across the healthcare enterprise leveraging the portfolio and project management office to transform strategic vision into program proposals incorporating outline plans for presentation to leadership.
  • Communicate and collaborate with senior leaders and other key stakeholders across UK, as a direct report to the UK Enterprise CIO (UK CIO ), on areas including the Active Directory, network, cybersecurity, ERP , and other key infrastructure as well as technologies (e.g., cloud, data centers, research computing, email) impacting the UK enterprise.
  • Champion the IT Governance framework including, but not limited to, sub-council structures such as Data Governance, IT Security, HIM Compliance and Privacy, among others required for programmatic oversight. This will require collaboration and coordination with the UK IT team, in particular around cybersecurity.
  • Envision and execute an organization structure that meets the future needs of UKHC and the UK enterprise.
  • Develop and execute the IT Strategic Plan ( ITSP ) as a key enabling strategy to the UKHC Strategic plan and overall UK IT Strategic Plan.
  • Work in a coordinated and collaborative fashion with the medical informatics leaders to include the CMIO , CNIO , and others as identified/appointed.
  • Enable IT and digital transformation programs through active engagement with the key goals of the UKHC strategic plan, defining the programs to deliver against those strategies and ensuring the organization has the skills, resources, and practices needed to attain and sustain its goals and objectives.
  • Align and calibrate the organization’s application and information strategy with the overall UK strategy.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities


The minimum qualifications for consideration include a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems Management, Business Administration, or a related field and 10 years of experience in an information technology leadership role. Knowledge of current and emerging technology principles and applications, computer system methodologies, and new technologies is required. The successful candidate must be an excellent communicator and relationship builder with a reputation for integrity, openness, and the expertise and demeanor to inspire confidence at all levels of the organization. The candidate must bring experience in IT strategic plan development and implementation and a track record of success working collaboratively across an organization with interdisciplinary teams to develop and obtain broad support for a shared vision and long-range plans.

Preferred Education/Experience


A Master’s degree and at least 10 years of successful experience in an Information Technology leadership role.
