Platinum Group Metal Services (PGMS) is a leading refiner and recycler of precious group metals. The growing demand for low carbon and responsibly sourced products is creating growth opportunities in critical metals recycling and secondary refining, and as the world’s largest precious metals recycler, PGMS is a key player in the circular economy.
This position, which reports directly to the Analytical Lab Manager, independently analyses and characterizes a variety of samples using instrumental and other analytical methods to determine precious metal content and impurity levels and to quantify other properties of samples in support of production.
This position uses SPC to monitor analytical processes. Also, participates in the development of analytical methods and instrumentation testing procedures, and development of calibration standards.
Your responsibilities:
  • Maintain accurate data records and instrument results according to quality principles
  • If problems are encountered, the incumbent independently evaluates the assays and initiates corrective action, including instrumental troubleshooting using advanced scientific principles
  • Communicates progress on status of work assignments. Interfaces with other departments on a routine basis.
  • Utilizes all lab equipment and material in accordance with job requirements in a safe and cost-effective manner
  • Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work area that meets or exceeds the plant 5S standards
  • Monitor instrument performance and/or assay results against standards, identifies potential problem areas, and notifies Management of potential problems
  • May perform other related assignments /projects as determined by Lab Manager.
  • Prepares and accurately determines metal content and other properties of solid materials by applying analytical and/or instrumentation methods in support of production. Provides final approval on outgoing assays.
  • Provide technical assistance as required
  • Possesses an in-depth understanding of melt production processes and maintains an on-going proficiency with all related analytical and instrumentation test methods relative to customer and plant specifications
  • Adherence to EHS, Quality and JM policies and standards is a condition of employment
  • Participate in instrumentation qualification and test method development
Requirements for the role:
  • 3-5 years’ experience with handling hazardous chemicals and materials is expected
  • Must have knowledge in the areas of chemical analysis and quality systems
  • Bachelor of Chemistry or related science with a minimum of 7 years analytical / developmental / quality control lab experience. Independent judgment in the application of advanced scientific principles pertaining to analytical analyses and understanding method development is essential
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with Spark / Laser ICP, GDMS, or XRF is desired
  • Customer focus
  • Working experience with ISO 9001, AS400/ERP/SAP and laboratory information management system such as LIMS is desired
  • Self-motivated. Able to work independently and in teams
  • Detail oriented
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite / Minitab is required
