Position Summary:
The Process Engineer is focused on improving the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of plant assets by contributing to many facets of the operation. As a member of the plant Tech Team, s/he will use their technical and analytical skills to support plant operations in process optimization and efficiency gains, troubleshooting process problems, identifying, and then developing permanent “fixes” for these problems. The process engineer also does preliminary engineering for capital projects and often manages some projects through completion. S/he will also play a key role in the start-up of new expansion projects, including preliminary testing and design, training, start-up planning, troubleshooting, and optimization. S/he will also lead RCAs (Root Cause Analyses) for product quality issues and process failures.
Responsibilities:
- Lead process improvement trials - develop Trial Plan, review with Operations team, monitor the trial while in progress, compile data, and issue final report.
- Standardize operational procedures and implement through Work Instructions.
- Perform cost analyses to guide Team on process and equipment optimization/upgrades.
- Establish contacts with key equipment vendors to assist in optimizing performance and assist in troubleshooting issues. Work as a contractor coordinator when managing their work.
- Troubleshoot process issues, identify, and develop procedures to minimize or eliminate future occurrences.
- Work with the Quality Assurance Lab to research quality issues and complaints, conduct RCAs, and assist in implementing solutions.
- Update Technical Information and Document files as needed and utilize the Management of Change (MOC) process.
- Optimize process performance. Identify the key levers to achieve equipment high-performance and implement procedures through Operator Work Instructions.
- Identify and implement solutions to avoid upsets and /or quality deviations.
- Utilize engineering skills to support Tech Team and Capital Group in designing, scoping, and providing preliminary equipment specifications and cost estimates for capital and/or repair projects.
- Monitor OEE data and other KPIs to ensure activities are focusing on the most important areas of the plant. This includes Multi Hearth Furnace production rate, ATP (Available to Produce / uptime), and First Pass Quality %.
- Identify, design, and manage capital projects and equipment upgrades.
- Participate or lead RCAs, PHAs (Process Hazard Analyses), and Risk Analyses.
Skills and Qualifications (Level I, II, III depends on knowledge and experience):
- Experience in Industrial Manufacturing facility including Carbon, Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Power, Petroleum.
- Technical skills include - mass and energy balances, pump and pipe-line sizing, life cycle cost analysis.
- Capital project design, scoping, and managing.
- Proficient in MS Office products. Added benefit if experience includes Yokogawa DCS, Exaquantum Data Historian, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Minitab, NetSuite/Shepherd
- Has the ability to work with team members from all levels within the organization.
- Ability to lead RCA’s, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA).
- Process Control troubleshooting and development; includes DCS and PLCs
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in Louisiana climate.
- Understanding of and ability to follow industrial safe work practices including - wearing required PPE, Lock-Out-Tag-Out, fall protection, confined space, mobile equipment, and other OSHA standard practices.
- Excellent writing and communication skills. Including report writing and presentations.
Education:
- BS or MS in Chemical Engineering or other related field of study
