Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Chaplain serves a multi-faith learning community. The Chaplain’s responsibilities include organizing Chapel programs that are inclusive and support the needs of the school community, providing support and guidance to the Mid-Pacific community, and ministering to the community-at-large as a representative of the school. This position will report to and be evaluated by the preschool/elementary and middle school/high school principals. The Elementary Principal will serve as the primary contact with the Chaplain.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Participate in professional development opportunities available to the chaplain’s ministry, with approval from the Principals.
  • Lead and support the spiritual, moral, and ethical growth of Mid-Pacific (Preschool to Grade 12) through the development and integration of chapel programs consistent with the tenets of the Christian faith and mission of the school, in consultation with the Principals.
    • Chapels must be age-appropriate, especially when addressing middle and high school students. The language and content should be tailored to meet the needs and interests of the students.
    • The religious content of the chapel messages should acknowledge other world religions that share key Christian values. As a school with ties to the United Church of Christ, the UCC values of inclusion and social justice are values shared with Mid-Pacific. Students having other religious heritages should feel included and have a sense of belonging to the Mid-Pacific community.
    • Meet regularly with the students in the Mid-Pacific community to support the curricular program (eg: Chapel Club).
    • Chaplain is expected to communicate a message of inclusivity concerning ethnicity.
  • Serve the Mid-Pacific community as a resource in matters of spirituality and ethics.
  • Represent Mid-Pacific at all times with grace and humility worthy of God’s calling.
  • LGBTQ+ issues, cultural backgrounds, and other critical issues that honor the humanity of our students and faculty; These perspectives, beliefs, and values must be included in chapel messages.
  • Meet regularly with the students in the Mid-Pacific community to support the curricular program (eg: Chapel Club).
  • Keep up with internal school communications (intranet, campus emails) in order to be attuned to school life.
  • Minister to the community-at-large as a representative of Mid-Pacific (e.g., memorial services, weddings, dedications, prayer services, funerals, conferences, etc.).
  • Provide pastoral care for and build meaningful relationships with the Mid-Pacific community (students, teachers, staff, families, alumni), through spiritual counseling, hospital visits, home visits, etc., as requested.
  • Chaplain is expected to communicate a message of inclusivity concerning ethnicity.
  • Manage a budget received through the student services budget.
  • Chapels must be age-appropriate, especially when addressing middle and high school students. The language and content should be tailored to meet the needs and interests of the students.
  • Plan, coordinate, facilitate, and implement all PS-12 chapel programs, and all worship services for the Mid-Pacific community, as requested (e.g., senior class baccalaureate, campus prayer, retreats, blessings, etc.). Involve student participation, inclusive of all students, in meaningful ways.
  • The religious content of the chapel messages should acknowledge other world religions that share key Christian values. As a school with ties to the United Church of Christ, the UCC values of inclusion and social justice are values shared with Mid-Pacific. Students having other religious heritages should feel included and have a sense of belonging to the Mid-Pacific community.
SCHOOL SAFETY
  • Maintain relevant knowledge of safety laws.
  • Participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Report any injury, hazard or illness immediately, to their Supervisor and Human Resources.
  • Encourage early reporting of incidents and forward information to Manager and Human Resources immediately.
  • Ensure compliance of safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that employees are provided information, instruction, training and supervision that they need to work safely.
  • Act as a role model by demonstrating safe work behaviors.
  • Ensure that equipment/supplies are properly maintained.
  • Take reasonable care to ensure their own safety and health and that of others.
  • Develop safe work procedures and ensure adherence to procedures.
  • Not place others at risk by any act or omission, and not willfully or recklessly interfere with safety equipment.
  • Ensure that employees are aware of and abide by all relevant safety procedures.
  • Communicate safety issues with employees.
  • Comply with the instructions given for their own safety and health and that of others, in adhering to safe work procedures.
  • Mandatory reporting of sexual abuse to law enforcement or child protective services, and Human Resources. Sexual abuse includes child molestation, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with a minor, and serial sexual misconduct, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with more than one victim; and committed by or alleged to have been committed by any perpetrator who is not a student of an included entity.
  • Identify, assess if necessary, and control hazards within the area of responsibility.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
The Chaplain of Mid-Pacific, serving a multi-faith learning community, should meet the following professional and personal qualifications:
  • Genuine interest in and respect for children of all ages.
  • Experience in providing pastoral care to students, faculty, staff, and families of Mid-Pacific.
  • Engaging, sincere presentation style appropriate to the range of students, PS-12.
  • Ability to listen and observe carefully.
  • Completion of divinity degree.
  • Experience in responding to controversial topics on matters of faith, values, morals, and ethics.
  • Willingness and commitment to uphold and support Mid-Pacific’s mission and vision.
  • Effective communication skills in speaking and writing.
  • Respect, openness, and sensitivity toward individuals of other faiths, beliefs, and sexual orientations.
  • Chapel experience in a school setting, preferably K-12.
SCHEDULE OF WORK HOURS
When school is in session, work hours will be 7:30am - 3:30pm generally. Specific chapel times are determined by each principal. Office hours (availability for pastoral care) will also be discussed with the Principals. There may be occasional events requiring the Chaplain’s participation after 3:30pm (e.g., parent presentations, special programs).
Work Calendar
The position of Chaplain is a salaried 10-month (August through May in accordance with the school calendar) employee position with benefits. The Chaplain will observe all school holidays and interim breaks (winter and spring). Principals may ask the Chaplain to attend professional development sessions with the employees.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Our campus consists of multiple buildings on 44 hilly acres that requires frequent walking including uphill and stairs. The employee may be required on a daily basis to frequently, unless otherwise noted, lift up to 50 lbs; stand and sit throughout the day while working on the computer and taking phone calls; walk to different areas on campus (athletic complex, school offices, school store, copier room, fields for fire drills). Requires some climbing of stairs and walking up a slight hill. Finger dexterity required, manipulating objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s), for example, using a keyboard. Must be able to respond quickly by foot in emergency situations.

On a daily basis the employee must frequently problem solve, make decisions, interpret data, organize, write, plan, and clearly communicate.
