The Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) is a person living in recovery with a substance use disorder working within an agency or organization that has been trained and certified by the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) to use their personal recovery story to assist others in developing their personal plan for recovery. The CRSS provides patient care at the direction of the Treatment Manager. These duties include but are not limited to; assisting with admission and discharge procedures, facilitate peer support/self-help groups, relay coping skills, orientation of new patients to the unit environment, periodic safety/location checks of all patients, and other care functions as assigned by the treatment manager. Patient populations served range in age from 19 years through patients in the later stages of life.
- Requires stable physical and mental health An understanding of recovery from substance use disorder.
- Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
- Medical terminology training preferred.
- Basic knowledge of consumer rights and advocacy Communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing, Frequently cope with stressful/rapidly changing situations.
- Serve as a role model, showing by example that recovery is possible.
- High School education or GED, 2 years CRSS experience preferred. Alabama Certified Recovery Support Peer Specialist, Basic Life Support and SECURE training upon hire or within 30 days or hire.
- Basic understanding of substance use disorder and the system of care.
- Understand the unique experience of persons struggling with a substance use disorder.
- Facilitate peer support/self-help groups
- Basic knowledge of empowerment and the goals and objectives of the consumer movement.
- Relay coping skills, positive attitude skills and self-esteem.
- Ability to work with individuals or groups.
- Knowledge of body mechanics and basic safety, principles of physical care and comfort.
