JOB POSTING


Five Colleges, Incorporated (FCI) has an opening for a Cataloging Librarian in support of a National Endowment for the Humanities-funded grant (MCMC Enrich/Discover) to enhance access to the museum collections. The primary responsibility is to work with a consortium of six museums and surrounding communities to add subject headings to art and artifacts in the repositories' collections which are cataloged in a shared database. The role involves analyzing existing data, conducting subject analysis, creating new data when necessary, and utilizing data analysis tools and open data sources to develop thesauri and apply subjects to the collections. Additionally, the Cataloging Librarian will provide instruction and contribute to the development of governance and local standards for the shared collections management system. The incumbent contributes to the educational mission of the Five College Consortium by fostering a cooperative and effective working environment that embraces diversity and inclusivity.


This is a full-time exempt, benefited position with Five Colleges, Incorporated. The primary work location is on the campus of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. It is an in-person onsite role, with options for a flexible work arrangement per FCI policies. The appointment term begins as soon as possible and ends June 30, 2025.


The ideal candidate:


  • Is very familiar with descriptive and structural metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and subject analysis and classification systems
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with stakeholders from a range of backgrounds
  • Has experience in original cataloging and metadata creation in a museum, library, or archives environment
  • Has applied knowledge of data and content standards for cataloging unique materials, and understands linked open data principles
  • Demonstrates a passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism
