Residential Operations is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Residential Operations maintains properties consisting of residence halls, single student apartments, family student apartments, and dining commons serving over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. In addition to providing service to residents, Residential Operations maintains facilities that include conference centers, office spaces, and short term lodging and housing facilities. Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general supervision of a supervisor, performs skilled cabinetry making for University owned Residence Halls, Apartments and Dining commons and related buildings as outlined below to accomplish the operational needs of the department. In compliance with HDAE goals and objectives, affirms and implements the department Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for a success in a multi-cultural society. Works in an environment, which is ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic. Works effectively in a team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to safely erect, work on and operate scaffolding, high ladders and various lifts.
  • 5+ years demonstrated work experience in the carpentry trade, showing multiple skills within the trade.
  • Knowledge and ability to correctly and safely perform work in other trade disciplines such as plumbing, locksmithing, and light electrical.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse work environment.


Special Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to be fitted with, and use, a respirator.

Technical


Constructs, assembles, finishes (matches stain finish and/or wood type and grain) of cabinets, furniture and installs assorted hardware and special equipment. Works from and/or develops drawings and specifications for custom applications. Reads and makes changes to blue prints. Performs mathematic calculations (fractions and geometry) pertaining to 32mm cabinetry system and the metric system and its conversions. Works with high-pressure laminates and all types of solid surface products, common and specialized hard woods, makes setups (calibrating and adjustments to milling and other specialized tools such as high speed routers, sanders, jointers, planers, saws and other fabrication and installation equipment). Installs doors and doorframes, frames walls, applies drywall, sets and pours concrete forms. Removes and/or installs sub-flooring, repairs chairs, sofas and tables. Repairs fencing and other general carpentry duties as assigned. Performs a variety of other skilled and unskilled tasks outside of assigned trade in support of the DLG Maintenance Shop and the Santa Ynez Service Center that includes weekend pager duty and occasional overtime required to meet the operational needs of the department. General


Performs basic plumbing repairs to sinks and toilets. Unclogs sinks and sewers using hand and motorized snakes. Performs inventory on an annual basis, or as needed by the department. Provides trade assistance to others within the division. Prepares labor and material costs records and documentation of work orders in progress and completed on a daily basis, which accurately reflects sequence and duration of workloads. May be required to perform other duties to meet the operational needs of the department. May be required to work schedules other than 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday, To meet the operational needs of the department. Responsible for completing job duties in a manner that demonstrates support for the Operations Unit. Initiates communication directly with co-workers and/or supervisors to improve and clarify working relationships, identifying problems and concerns, and seeking resolution to work related conflicts. Affirms and implements the department Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multicultural society. Affirms and implements the departmental "Strategic Plan" designing goals and objectives that relate to the vision statement.

Security


Locks unoccupied areas before leaving them including windows and doors. Safeguards keys assigned by keeping them on your person at all times during working hours and securing them at the end of your shift. Unless on official business, your work keys are to remain on campus at all times. Notifies clients of work status by leaving a door tag in the area if unoccupied.

Safety


Understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures including but not limited to the use of and/or working on: Breathing Apparatus, Respiratory Protection, hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and safety harness. Adheres to current safety regulations an precautions as prescribed by the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Uniform Building Code, EPA regulations including storage and disposal procedures, common Paint Shop practices and policies and other Federal, State and local agencies. Understands and adheres to the safety practices on use of all hand and power tools associated with painting and other building and maintenance trades. Understands and adheres to current safety practices in relation to proper ventilation and non-smoking rules when applying paints, finishes and other harmful inhalants and flammable substances. Promptly reports on the job accidents to the supervisor. Participates in shop safety programs. Develops, promotes, adheres to safety rules, standards or techniques as an integral part of business. Adheres and implements the 20-minute work rule for all repetitive work tasks.
