Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or possession of a General equivalency diploma (GED)

Experience

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

  • Carpenter “D”
    • A minimum of two (2) years of carpenter or related craftsman work experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of carpenter or related craftsman work experience.

Certification/Licensure

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued from the jurisdiction of residence

Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Summary

Carpenters are responsible for performing skilled woodcraft work in the construction, alteration, renovation, repair, modification and fabrication of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) facilities. The incumbent works with wood and wood substitutes for the framework, rafters, doors, paneling, interior and exterior trim, staircases, beams and other high-grade wooden items where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important.

Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

Essential Functions

  • Works from and interprets complex plans, blueprints, and sketches; and uses rulers, tapes, squares, planes, powered saws, routers, miter boxes and other power and hand tools to perform work assignments. Uses shop mathematics in planning and completing projects requiring the use of instruments such as arcs, tangents, and circles.
  • Completes the required forms, tags, and other documentation that describes maintenance work and enters data into appropriate asset management systems. Prepares materials requisitions for the supervisor's approval and ensures equipment, systems and associated mechanical devices are maintained according to Authority and manufacturer standards.
  • Performs skilled woodcraft and related work activities in the construction, renovation, alteration, repair, maintenance or modification of WMATA facilities. Duties include the fabrication and repair of high-grade wooden items such as cabinetry, commercial and industrial furniture, graphic displays, paneling and design models and prototypes, while ensuring compliance with industry and WMATA applicable code and principles standards.
  • Performs skilled tasks such as laminating, fine surfacing, plastic overlaying, steam bending and grain matching. Fabricates templates and patterns and selects appropriate machine tools and materials. Applies decorative finishes to wooden items, and develops curves, contours, shaped surfaces and features such as inlays, marquetry, miniature parts, friezes, matched contours and complex joints.
  • Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques, and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments, and ensures WMATA facilities are operationally safe, neat, orderly maintained aesthetically appealing and functional.

Other Functions

  • Supports response efforts in emergencies by providing immediate repairs to protect Authority assets. Responds to and assists during severe weather emergencies, ensuring safety requirements are met/exceeded.
  • Attends and passes the required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently. Performs assignments according to established industry and WMATA safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
