The University of Washington’s
Information School
is seeking a
Career Advisor
to provide support and guidance to all iSchool students in regard to the development and implementation of activities related to career services, including employer outreach/relations, promotion, event planning (such as workshops and career panels), records and data management, and individual and group career advising.
The Office of Student Services is a vibrant and energetic environment relying on current technologies to create and support a welcoming, inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning community for all iSchool students. Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Career Advising, this position works closely with the Student Services staff to provide support and leadership for Information School joint activities such as the all iSchool Welcome, Convocation, and the iSchool Career Fair, as well as providing career services support for all the iSchool degree programs. The Career Services Advisor works closely with students, faculty, staff, as well as prospective students, alumni, employers and other UW departments. The Career Services Advisor is expected to meet with executive level individuals both internally and externally.

What You’ll Be Doing:
Career and Leadership Advising:
  • Guide employers on opportunities to interact with iSchool students for internships, projects and full-time employment.
  • Refer students to appropriate faculty, as necessary, for answers to advanced career development questions related to the field/discipline.
  • Provide career advising to current iSchool students in all degree programs. Respond to and answer questions (in person, by email, or phone) throughout the career planning process.
  • Advise students on techniques to leverage their culminating degree projects (i.e., capstone, portfolio, etc.) in their job search.
  • Provide career coaching and advising to students individually and in groups about career decisions and job search strategies.
  • Review and provide feedback to students regarding their employment materials (e.g. resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile).
  • Collaborate with Program Advisors in advising students on internship and directed fieldwork options.
  • Assist in developing career services for a diverse student population including: graduate and undergraduate students, minority students, online, international and non-traditional students.
Event Planning:
  • Participate in iSchool new student orientations providing students an overview of career services.
  • Collaborate with other career service advisor and employer engagement manager in planning and organizing employer events.
  • Assist in planning the iSchool Career Fair and Government, Libraries, Archive, and Museum (GLAM) Career Jam.
  • Partner with the Director for Student Services, Program Advisors, iSchool Student Organizations, iAffiliates and Advancement Office on career programs.
  • Coordinate and support the Associate Director with development and implementation of programs and services, designed to equip students with necessary job search skills and employment strategies.
  • Coordinate employer interactions with students, including on-campus visits, on-site interviewing, site visits, etc.
  • Support and participate in Student Services activities such as Open Houses, all iSchool Welcome, iWelcome Week, iSchool Career Fair, Study Breaks, and Convocation.
Communication and Information Dissemination:
  • Serve as a contact for employers on job or internship opportunities for iSchool students.
  • Assist in updating portions of the Student Services website,program canvas sites related to career services, and the iCareers canvas course.
  • Interact with iSchool faculty regarding career resources and employment opportunities.
  • Initiate and respond to written and electronic correspondence with students, faculty, and employers.
  • Present in classes, workshops, and orientations regarding career topics as requested.
  • Collaborate with the Career Program Coordinator on the weekly Career Pro-Tip.
  • Maintain and disseminate information on job and internship opportunities for iSchool students.
Other:
  • Participate in UW Career Services discussion group.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to expand knowledge base for the position.
  • Facilitate the tracking data on internships and job placements of iSchool Students.
  • Collaborate with UW Career Center and other UW departments and offices in developing programs and providing career resources for iSchool students.
  • Participate in community outreach to potential employers.
  • Attend and participate in All School, Staff meetings, committees, iSchool events, and other activities as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Coordinate with the iSchool Advancement Office on working with alumni, donors and board members on career-related issues and opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in programming or advising.
  • Familiarity with employee recruiting and/or university recruitment
  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with career advising, career programming, career development, and job search process.
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication, planning, and information technology skills.
  • Experience in program planning and management, preferably student services.
  • Must be articulate and able to present well in writing, verbally, and via technology.
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Information Management, or related field.
  • Must be able to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead others.
  • Experience in presenting workshops or teaching.
Equivalent education/experience may substitute for all minimum qualifications.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience coordinating internship programs.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including SharePoint.
  • Familiarity with Handshake Career CRM or similar software.
  • Experience working with international students.
  • Familiarity with Canvas or equivalent learning management systems.
  • Experience in university recruitment.
  • Familiarity with video/web conferencing technology such as Zoom.
