Position Information
The Office of the Career and Professional Development Center is accepting resumes for a full-time, grant funded exempt position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The Career Counselor will provide individual and group career counseling/job search coaching to students/alumni to help them make informed career decisions; explore occupational choices; and prepare for an effective job search and connect with internship and fulltime employment opportunities. The Career Counselor with assist students with identifying the factors influencing career development and help assess interests, abilities, and values; help locate resources and sources of career information; help determine next steps and develop a plan to achieve goals, and provide a wealth of useful information in key areas such as career discovery and planning, interviewing skills, resume writing, and more.
The Career Counselor will work one-on-one with individual students, playing an important role as a leader in helping these individuals shape their futures. The position will require interaction with a diverse student body in an affirming, positive environment that affords the intangible benefits of putting interpersonal communication talents to work in coaching and guiding students. Ultimately assisting students in becoming skilled and competitive in a global workforce.

Responsibilities
  • Research and analyze current employment trends.
  • Guide students in determining their interests and abilities using a wide range of methods, such as aptitude assessments, interviews and planning materials.
  • Under supervision of the Director of Career Services, assist Director with further development and implementation of various career related components.
  • Educate students regarding resume building, interview skills and professionalism.
  • Develop positive working relationships with faculty and administration.
  • Assist with further improving student outcome, data utilization and cross functional approaches.
  • Develop career services programs that will help students in exploring and planning career options.
  • Conduct trainings, workshops, presentation other events to develop career planning and employability skills for students.
  • Maintain contact with employers and assist with recruitment.
  • Conduct mock interviews and job search strategies and execute outreach programs to promote career services among students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Counsel individual learners, working with them to aid in the development of both hard and soft skills.
  • Provide career counseling and career development sessions for students and/or alumni.

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in grant writing and proposals.
  • Working knowledge of career development, career counseling, and assessments.
  • Four to five years’ experience in counseling or related field.
  • Experience in career/internship placement, interviewing, program planning and student services.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, social sciences or related field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to work independently and to complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of grant writing and proposals.
  • Ability to successfully relate well with students and be sensitive to their career needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
  • Ability to use basic computer software.
  • Ability to interact with diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of computer-based career applications.
  • Ability to follow-through and manage multiple assignments and program efficiently.
