Job Description

Duties

In this position, you will:

  • Performs various duties such as moving, arranging and lifting very large and unusually heavy material and collections.
  • Dusts, scrubs, sweeps, waxes and polishes horizontal surfaces such as floors, cleans mirrors, empties trash and recycle bins, washes walls, windows, air vents, blinds, and fixtures.
  • Loads and unloads debris, trash, equipment, supplies and other materials from trucks, vans and cars by using dollies, hand trucks, hand operated hydraulic lifts, and/or by hand.
  • Assists with custodial tasks as required, custodial duties include cleaning offices, exhibit space, restrooms, corridors, storage rooms, stairways or any area within the confines of the building(s) using brooms, mops, buckets, heavy duty vacuums and buffers and scrubbers.

Additional Conditions of Employment:

Must be available to work any one of the various shifts and/or assigned workdays that include holidays, weekends, and call backs for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks involve moderately heavy physical effort and require continuous standing, bending, stooping and reaching. Must carry and set up ladders and scaffolding. Requires frequent lifting and emptying wastebaskets and lifting, pushing, pulling, moving and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires occasional operation of heavy duty scrubbers and floor buffers requiring physical ability to control heavy duty equipment and perform minor maintenance on this equipment.

Qualifications

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

  • Ability to do the work of a Building Services Worker without more than normal supervision.

If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:

  • Knowledge of work practices (includes maintaining facilities in a neat, clean and orderly manner).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to operate with dexterity and within safety requirements.
  • Reliability and Dependability as a Building Services Worker.

Applicants who meet or exceed the screen-out element will be assigned to one of two category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the screen-out element and excels in most of the job related elements above.
Better Category - Meets the screen-out element and satisfies most of the job related elements above.
Good Category - Meets the screen-out element, but does not satisfy most of the job related elements above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.

Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
