Job Description

Duties

As a Biological Science Technician (Invasive Species Strike Team (ISST)), you will spend a percentage of your time traveling to/from Refuges within the Texas Gulf Coast Region, assisting with the planning and implementation of invasive species surveys, inventories, monitoring, and management. The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring elements of physical environment such as temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and humidity.
  • Operating light trucks, ATV/UTV/ORUV's, small watercraft and various other equipment.
  • Assisting, planning, and implementing of invasive species surveys and inventories.
  • Providing technical assistance to Refuge staff, conservation crews, biological technicians, and volunteers.
  • Controlling invasive species using integrated pest management techniques.
  • Developing databases and analyzing data using standard statistical methods and procedures in preparation of reports.
Physical Demands: Field work requires strenuous activity for significant periods of time, often walking over rough terrain and in muddy conditions; on rough or uneven surfaces; wading through vegetation choked marshes, walking across desert conditions, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and in many instances during difficult weather conditions. Field work results in exposure to such things as: poison ivy, insects, sun, wind, temperature variation and many varieties of pollen. Data interpretation and processing require extensive time at a computer terminal.
Seasonal field studies involve considerable physical demands, such as frequent, extensive travel on foot; bending; crouching; and climbing; exertion from lifting and carrying equipment; and energy drain from hot, cold, wet, dry, and windy weather. The incumbent must be in good physical condition and anticipate the demands of each field trip. Occasionally lifts containers weighing over 50 pounds.
