Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has an immediate opening for a seasonal Biological Science Assistant (Shellfish Sampler) position located in Tillamook, Oregon.
Anticipated Duration: This position is anticipated to last from May 02, 2023 – October 31, 2023. (These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).
The purpose of this position is to provide assistance with sampling, monitoring, surveys, and research for multiple shellfish fisheries. Work includes collecting, tabulating, and analyzing data on shellfish fisheries and shellfish resources.
What you will do:
Sampling and data collection for commercial and recreational shellfish fisheries:
  • Conduct periodic checks with commercial and recreational shellfish harvesters to ensure compliance, and report violations.
  • Assist with local shellfish research activities.
  • Conduct effort counts, query shellfish harvesters about their harvest activities, and collect samples of their catch.
  • Assist with analysis, evaluation of summary statistics, and preparation of research reports and outreach materials.
  • Summarize seasonal shellfish harvest activities and offer recommendations for program improvements.
  • Contact recreational and commercial shellfish harvesters at boat ramps, access points, tide flats, ocean beaches, and seafood processing plants to collect pertinent data.
  • Monitor commercial shellfish harvest activities and assist with information records.
  • Participate as field sampler to collect data about shellfish habitats, species composition, length, weight, and age.
  • Enter data into Excel and Access databases, retrieve data, and generate data summaries, statistics, tables, graphs, charts, and other output products.

Working Conditions:
  • Outdoor activities include frequent trips to docks and shellfish harvest locations at irregular hours in all kinds of weather. Sampling is conducted regularly by walking on docks, along the shorelines of estuaries and beaches, in soft sediment tide flats, and from small boats in estuaries.
  • Occasional work on small boats and commercial fishing boats in adverse weather and rough seas.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will check driving records for in-state finalists. Out-of state finalists will be required to present a current driving record for review.
  • Occasional sampling is done in commercial fish processing plants around moving equipment such as forklifts; floors are usually wet and slippery.
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Indoor activities include work at a computer workstation for data entry, organization of data files, correspondence, information synthesis, and preparation/processing of samples.
  • Work includes both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather. Frequent use of a vehicle. This position requires a driver license and an acceptable driving record.
Requirements/Requested Skills:
Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, applicants with related experience (e.g., experience handling shellfish, conducting counts of harvesters and creel surveys, biological sampling of marine and estuarine shellfish or finfish, using computers and electronic equipment, data entry into multiple databases, generation of data summaries, ability to identify marine and estuarine shellfish, communicate with shellfish harvesters and the public, and keep neat and precise field data) and/or who possess or are in pursuit of a college degree in fisheries or wildlife science, or a closely related biological/ecological degree may be given preference.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.
