Some of what you'll be doing:

As the Baggage Operations Systems Specialist in the Aviation Maintenance department, you will be responsible for the baggage handling system contingencies and will be the liaison between the airlines and other Port departments.

  • You will monitor bagwell activity to assure safe baggage handling and enforce rules and regulations.
  • You will coordinate baggage system testing to minimize operational impacts.
  • You will represent the department as directed for baggage system presentations to other departments and outside entities.
  • You will oversee the daily operation of the baggage handling systems.
  • You will educate and provide recommendations for the multiple stakeholders on proper use of the baggage systems and contingency plans.
  • You will be responsible for monitoring contingency plans to minimize or eliminate impacts as a result of system irregularities.
  • You will accurately input data for airline flight schedule information within various databases for baggage movement and sortation.
  • You will attend daily conveyor maintenance and operational meetings.
  • You will review and analyze various system performance parameters and system reports to proactively prevent and/or minimize impacts of system irregularities.
Who you are:

Two years of experience may be substituted for one year of education:

  • Experienced – You have three (3) years of experience airline/airport operations or maintenance in the movement and/or screening of baggage at a medium to large airport.
  • Collaborator – You are someone who can work with diverse internal and external stakeholders at various levels of the organization to build relationships while providing excellent guidance and customer service.
  • Problem Solver – You can effectively use your critical thinking skills to quickly address issues and recommend solutions.
  • Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Desired – We hope you have five (5) years of experience in baggage system maintenance, engineering, operational oversight, or design experience.
  • Knowledgeable – You have general knowledge of airline baggage handling processes and the airport operations/maintenance of baggage handling systems.
  • Effective Communicator – You have excellent verbal, written and active listening skills to and the ability to effectively work with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Adaptable - You can work effectively in a high stress environment with deadlines, unresolved situations, frequent changing priorities, delays, and unexpected events while staying calm under pressure.
What else you need to know:
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Work Schedule – You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies.
  • Work Environment – You will primarily work in an office environment. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
