Job Description

SCHEDULE: 40 hours, Tuesday - Saturday, 5:00 p.m. - 1:30 a.m.

Pays $21.40 per hour. DOE

LOCATION: 35 Creighton Street, Boston MA

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Awake Overnight Counselor will provide awake overnight coverage, doing regular rounds throughout the building, being available to tenants as necessary, assisting with regular daily tenant wellness checks, observing and upholding the rights of tenants, overseeing occupancy agreement and house rule compliance, setting limits when appropriate, and providing crisis intervention as necessary. Counselors will contribute to the physical upkeep of the building by noting any housekeeping or maintenance issues that arise during their shift, resolving these problems where possible, and forwarding concerns to appropriate staff for later resolution when necessary. May be assigned to other Supportive Housing sites as necessary. Occasional daytime availability will be required for trainings, meetings and other obligations. This person will be an important member of a team, which has as its goal assisting our tenants to achieve the very highest possible quality of life.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

REQUIRED:

  • English literacy
  • High School Diploma or GED

PREFERRED:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work well with a diverse population, including formerly chronically homeless persons and those living with co-occurring behavioral health disorders.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Previous counseling experience

PHYSICAL ABILITIES/SKILLS:

REQUIRED:

  • Ability to climb several flights of stairs.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (50 lbs.)

MENTAL ABILITIES/SKILLS:

REQUIRED:

  • Well organized
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to follow through on scheduled tasks.
  • Ability to diffuse/mediate disputes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Provide awake overnight coverage.
  • Using the email group for this residence and other means, communicate with all relevant staff each day regarding information concerning tenants. Observe all policies and procedures related to the health and safety of the tenants.
  • Represent Pine Street Inn/Congregate Housing.
  • Oversee compliance with house rules and lease agreements.
  • Accept other duties or work locations as assigned in order to meet the needs of the organization during weather or other emergencies.
  • Observe all policies and procedures related to the health and safety of the tenants.
  • Complete the daily checklist.
  • Ensure that all entrances and sidewalks are free of snow and ice.
  • Perform other additional assignments or projects as requested/directed by supervisor.
  • Check with all tenants on a daily basis.
  • Promote social interaction and cooperative problem solving.
  • Clean and setup vacant apartments for new tenants.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary living environment.
  • Communicate maintenance issues to Congregate Housing Facilities Department.
  • Comply with and model compliance with all PSI policies, including illness prevention and occupational health policies.
