The Automation Engineer is responsible for providing automation support to the Value Stream, supporting design and execution phases on small and large projects, and ensuring alignment of site automation practices with global and industry engineering standards. The Automation Engineer plays a key role as a member of a team of engineers within the Technical Services group. The person in this role will be expected to be a leader in the automation space for the facility and will be looked to be a site SME on major automation platforms.
Automation is critical to the modern facility and manufacturing compliance and due to its critical nature, the Automation Engineer will be required to collaborate closely with other members of local and global teams. Responsibilities include coordination of suppliers, engagement with Value Stream for day-to-day troubleshooting, active participation in support of Facilities and Maintenance activities, commissioning protocol drafting/execution, and support for IQ/OQ for assigned systems.

  • Upon gaining necessary experience with site automation systems, participate in the automation team’s rotation that provides on-call or on-site support.
  • Function as a site technical resource for questions and issues related to instrumentation and control systems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting efforts with operations, skilled trades persons, and process engineers during times of equipment or control system malfunction.
  • Apply continuous improvement tools to analyze and address system weaknesses to build reliability and robustness into the control systems.
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor/Manager.
  • Lead the design and installation of instrumentation and control systems on small projects, ensuring alignment with GSK standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Develop and optimize automation SOPs to promote system robustness, perform triennial SOP reviews as required, and perform gap analysis of local SOPs against analogous global procedures to ensure alignment.
  • Maintain existing and develop new GMP life-cycle documentation for instrumentation and control systems in coordination with the site Validation group.
  • Authors specifications and qualification protocols as required and leads execution of commissioning and qualification protocols.
  • Demonstrate a serious commitment to personnel and process safety during automation process operations and during troubleshooting activities and other safety initiatives and programs.
  • Assist with deviation investigations for areas of expertise, and lead investigations when appropriate.
  • Develop and optimize operation and maintenance procedures and training programs for instrumentation and control systems.

Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Automation Engineering/Chemical Engineering)
  • 2+ years specialized engineering experience (design/construction/manufacturing/automation)
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Familiarity with DeltaV workstation deployment utilizing terminal servers
  • Experience with DeltaV Batch, Rockwell PLCs (BPCS/SIS), Siemens PLC, OSI-pi, Mimic Simulation Software
  • Knowledge of virtualized system implementation and management using HyperV
  • Working knowledge of DeltaV Live configuration
  • Familiarity with DeltaV Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) logic
  • Process automation programming, troubleshooting, and qualification experience
  • Understanding of industry standards including ISA S88 Batch controls framework, IEC 61511 Functional Safety standards, and IEC 62443 ICS Cybersecurity
