Job Description
What to Expect

Tesla is seeking an associate lab manager to manage a team of technicians responsible for building test equipment for worldwide production of vehicle, cell and energy products. As a member of our team, you will ensure the testers we build meet our world class expectations to ensure success of the overall projets. You must have a genuine passion for building awesome equipment, inspire teams to get the most of them, and manage day to day tasks to accomplish overall program goals.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with program managers to create a forecast for tester builds, along with resource and material planning required for timely start of tester builds
  • Continuously enhance strategies and planning using past project performance
  • Confer with management and engineering staff to implement plans and recommendations
  • Troubleshoot any number of issues that stand in the way of schedule, from part availability and skillset challenges, then implement sustainable solutions
  • Oversee project BOMs, critical parts purchasing, ensure timely communication with suppliers for dates, and work with engineering to find alternatives for long lead time parts
  • Drive build shop improvements, support critical path projects, and offer a great level of flexibility to changing business needs
  • Reduce lead times through inventory process improvement initiatives
  • Improve and implement processes that support our goals of producing testers that are of highest quality and made fast enough to meet program deadlines
  • Recruit employees, assign, direct, and evaluate their work, and identify key growth areas for team and provide opportunities and feedback that support their professional development
  • Lead, inspire, and set aggressive goals for team to create a cross-functional and dynamic workforce
  • Define and communicate project requirements to the team, manage day to day build and inventory tasks, run daily standups, and communicate updates to management in a timely manner
  • Own space management for the shop, seek options to grow build and inventory spaces, and ensure validation space is available for testers reaching that stage
  • Develop methods for improving employee efficiency and reducing waste of materials or resources
  • Manage parts purchasing and kitting for outsourced tester builds
  • Create an environment of mutual trust and support by encouraging employee participation and building team unity
  • Focus on solving problems, not blaming, complaining or making excuses
What You’ll Bring

  • 3+ years functioning in a supervisory/leadership capacity in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience managing staffing, resources, budgets, inventory, equipment, schedule, and capacity
  • 7+ years experience in a machine shop or equipment maintenance
  • AS degree in an engineering field or prior experience as a shop manager in a manufacturing setting. BS degree is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret EE and ME prints
  • Fluency with MS Office Suite
  • Ability to travel of up to 25%
  • Ability to lead change, with enthusiasm and a positive approach
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, including ability to communicate effectively to the intended audience
