Job Summary:
In addition to performing the clinical duties of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), the Associate Chief CRNA serves as a true second in command who must be versed in all aspects of the Chief CRNA's role. The Associate Chief is prepared to assume overall responsibility for CRNAs in the event the Chief CRNA is unable to carry out his/her duties. The Associate Chief CRNA provides the first line of management for all Divisional Lead CRNAs and the Service Specialists serving under those Leads. The Associate Chief assists in evaluation of all CRNAs providing guidance and support to the Divisional Leads. The Associate Chief also has an important and primary role in recruiting and retaining CRNA staff and serves to manage conflicts that may not be settled on the level of the Divisional Lead. The Associate Chief also serves as the manager accountable for the staff of Anesthesia Technicians.

Department Summary:
The Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology embraces the anesthesia care team approach to patient care, involving anesthesiologists and residents, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) and anesthesia technicians. The more than 200 CRNAs at Vanderbilt provide anesthesia for all types of surgical procedures, including cardiac, pediatrics, vascular, trauma, neurosurgery, plastics, radiologic, and special procedures. CRNAs administer general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical, obstetric, and diagnostic procedures.
Vanderbilt is a clinical affiliate of the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA) in Madison, Tennessee, which is the second largest nurse anesthesia program in the country. Vanderbilt is also a clinical affiliate for the Union University Nurse Anesthesia program in Jackson, Tennessee. Student nurse anesthetists assist in approximately 7,000 anesthetics per year while on Vanderbilt rotations.

Requirements:
  • Five (5) years of CRNA experience. Supervisory/leadership experience is preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited/approved CRNA program
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration (LCR):
  • TN Registered Nurse and CRNA certification
