About the Opportunity

The City of Oxnard is looking for full-time Assistant Planners to join our team in Oxnard, California. This is an in-office position, working a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.


Your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:


  • Performing plan review, issuing permits, and assisting developers, engineers, architects, and other customers at the planning counter
  • Processing zoning clearances, home occupations, and temporary use permits
  • Reviewing development projects for design, layout, parking, architecture, landscape and compliance with zoning code
  • Reviewing and evaluating land use development proposals
  • Responding to public inquiries at the planning counter, via email or phone
  • Writing planning staff reports for the Planning Commission hearings or City Council
  • Performing entitlement/background research regarding developments



About You

Candidates for all roles would require the following skills and experience:


  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English to effectively communicate with fellow employees, customers, and vendors
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders in various levels and interest groups
  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Economics, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture



About the Benefits

As recognition for all your hard work and determination, you can look forward to the following annual salary:


  • Assistant Planner - $64,199.62 - $99,456.66


Assistant Planners will also receive the following generous benefits:


  • Tuition reimbursement
  • 12 paid holidays off per year
  • Sick leave accrued at a rate of 3.70 hours per pay period
  • Life insurance coverage
  • CalPERS Retirement – “Classic” members: 2% at 55 and “New” members: 2% at 62. Employees pay a portion of their annual earnings toward their retirement. The City does not participate in Social Security
  • Generous health and dental coverage
  • 1% contribution to deferred compensation program
  • Educational incentive pay based on degree - 2.5% to 3%
  • 9/80 schedule - every other Friday off
  • Vacation leave accrued at a rate of 4.39 to 8.08 hours per pay period based on years of service
