Position Summary

The School seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor who will specialize in criminal law and procedure and evidence with a focus on issues of importance to defense counsel. The selected candidate will serve as one of the School’s primary contacts and instructors for public defenders and court-appointed counsel, providing support for the public defense education work of the School. The selected candidate also will advise, write, and teach other public officials involved in the North Carolina criminal justice system, including judges and magistrates.

Teaching. The selected candidate will have significant responsibilities for teaching and curriculum planning in Public Defense Education programs, including the Misdemeanor Defender School, New Felony Defender School, and Annual Public Defender Conference. The selected candidate also will teach in programs for magistrates and district and superior court judges, including orientation programs, biannual conferences, and Judicial College courses.

Advising. The selected candidate will advise public defenders, court-appointed counsel, and judicial officials regarding criminal law and procedure and evidentiary issues.

Scholarship. The selected candidate will produce scholarship in the areas of criminal law and procedure and evidence. This may include manual chapters, articles, and legal references. The position also will be expected to contribute to the North Carolina Criminal Law Blog, a resource for practitioners as well as an outlet for scholarly research.
