Job Title
Position Title: Assistant Principal
Location: Bates Academy
Salary: $88,200.00
Reports to: Principal
Bargaining Unit: N/A
Benefits Eligibility: Successful candidates will be eligible for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage, as well as illness days.
Telecommuting Eligibility: Not eligible for telecommuting
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Applicants must possess and provide evidence of both:
- Valid State of Michigan Teacher Certificate in Secondary or Elementary Education, and
- School Administrator Certificate
- Applicants must show evidence of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid State of Michigan Teacher Certificate in Secondary or Elementary Education, and
- School Administrator Certificate
Experience:
- Exemplary presentation skills, organizational skills and communication (speaking, listening, and writing) skills;
- Evidence of skills analyzing and interpreting student achievement data and utilizing that data to increase student achievement.
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience with an annual rating of effective (E), or highly effective (HE).
- Proven experience serving in a leadership capacity (i.e., school improvement chair, lead teacher, etc.)
- Strong technology skills including competence in the use of technology to prepare and complete reports and communications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current educational research and ability to translate into classroom and school practice.

Essential Functions:
- Supervises school personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing professional growth and achieving overall objectives of the school’s curriculum.
- Model, identify, discuss and provide feedback on effective pedagogical strategies.
- Supervise instruction, including monitoring of lesson plans and provide actionable feedback.
- Provide professional development opportunities and establish Professional Learning Communities focused on closing the achievement gap.
- Develop programs aligned with the School Improvement Plan and the District Academic Plan.
- Interpret, review, and monitor data systems relative to student assessments.
- Access the student information system for the purposes of creating, monitoring, and reviewing schedules, reports, and student data.
- Communicates relevant policies and procedures with regard to student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff and parents.
- Contact and communicate directly with parents/guardians on a regular basis to ensure parent awareness of and involvement in their child’s school performance.
- Conduct teacher observations and assist with the performance evaluation process.
- Work and collaborate effectively with teachers and other school-based personnel to develop and implement individual student support plans.
- Assist with the management of the school’s operational processes (i.e., budgeting, facility maintenance, grant compliance, scheduling, etc.)
- Maintain accurate data, records, etc. to document all activities conducted and services provided.
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Principal.
Security Clearance:
Internal Applicants
If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
