Job Description
Candidates can expect to earn $3,000-$3,500 per month consummate with experience
– Position Description
The assistant sports turf manager reports directly to the head sports turf manager. Under his/her supervision, the assistant sports turf manager directs and participates in the maintenance of the field and related work as required. He/she typically supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and may serve in the head sports turf manager's capacity during absences.
Typical functions:
The assistant sports turf manager:
  • Is responsible for the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; assists in chemical applications and/or operates and calibrates chemical application equipment; participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Assists in planning, supervising and executing the maintenance of entire field
  • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and training, and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
Other functions:
This job includes, but is not limited to:
All types of sports field maintenance labor such as: o Turfgrass Management
o Sod cutting and installation
o Turfgrass sprigging
o Irrigation management
o Mowing, trimming and use of blowers
o Fertilizing with a walk-behind fertilizer
o Field markings and logo painting
o Baseball specific: infield, mound and home plate maintenance
The operation and maintenance of power equipment such as:
o Reel and rotary mowers
o Tractors
o Utility vehicles
o Leaf blowers
o Trimmers
o Top-dressers
o Aerators
o Sprigging machines
o Backhoes
o Dump trucks
o Bobcats
Additional duties such as:
o basic carpentry
o basic plumbing

Employment standards:
Requires:
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields; the seeding, sodding and maintenance practices for sports field turfgrass and synthetic surfaces; the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners, herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
  • High level of understanding of the sports governing bodies’ requirements for field layouts and markings
  • Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of crew and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and employer communication
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
