Job Description

The Washington Times, the nation’s leader in providing hard-hitting journalism and razor-sharp commentary, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Assistant Editor( Part-time) to add to our Editorial Team.

The Assistant Editor will assist in developing the coverage of faith, cultural and social issues for The Washington Times Higher Ground. The focus will be on trends as well as political and regulatory developments related to the family structure in order to produce a broad range of news and opinion pieces that explain the intersection of culture and politics to our readers.

The ideal candidate will bring a fresh perspective and have a keen eye for creative ideas to generate content that separates The Washington Times from its competitors and grow online audiences.

Essential Responsibilities: (Those which define the major aspects of the position and help to determine the degree of success in performance.)

  • Participate in the coverage of religious, cultural and social issues, trends, and policies and legislation affecting the family structure. Be able to explain their effect on religious communities, the family and the nation.
  • Propose, develop, assign and edit news articles and/or opinion pieces for Higher Ground.
  • Propose and develop enterprise story ideas with a strong focus on exclusive content for a national audience.
  • Recruit, cultivate and manage freelance contributors.
  • Competent using an online content management system. Use SEO best practices.
  • Check facts and improve copy for consistency and clarity. Correct errors before publication.
  • Maintain knowledge of politics, current affairs, religious and social trends, and popular culture. Stay current with legislation and breaking news.
  • Evening, weekend and holiday hours may be required.
  • Use solid, responsible journalism judgment, strong word skills and knowledge of copyright and libel laws.
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills. This position requires the ability to work well in teams as well as alone.
  • Edit materials to ensure accuracy of spelling, grammar, punctuation, facts and AP style.
  • Write occasional column.
  • Coordinate efforts with newsroom editors.
  • Meet digital and print deadlines.

Working Condition: Fast-paced, often highly pressured newsroom environment with strict deadlines. Must be able to structure work assignments with minimal supervision.
