Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the administrative guidance of the Director of Nursing, the Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, administering and directing a broad program of nursing services for all licensed units.
Qualifications
Registered Nurse (RN) with required state licensure.
At least three (3) years of successful nursing experience in a long-term care environment; most of which should be in a management role.
CPR certification.
Must possess proof of continuing education (current).
Must show the ability to communicate effectively, and to speak, read, and write in a legible and understandable manner
Working knowledge of nursing home regulations and the Nurse Practice Act.
Genuine caring for, and interest in, the elderly and handicapped people. Must have the ability to relate positively to residents, their families, employees and the community at large.
Must meet all local health regulations and pass a post-employment-offer physical exam, if required. This requirement includes drug screening, criminal background investigation, and reference inquiries.
Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job, with or without accommodation.
Must possess good, sound clinical knowledge of conditions and common diagnosis.
Essential Job Functions
  • Management of the Nursing Department Duties:
♦ Assist Director of Nursing in establishing short and long term plans for the nursing department.
♦ Assist Director of Nursing in implementing and interpreting Company policies and procedures as established by state and federal regulations.
♦ Coordinate nursing services with other patient care services, i.e. therapies, dietetics, and physicians.
♦ Act as Infection Control Nurse, monitoring and tracking infections on a monthly basis and chairing the Quality Improvement committee.
♦ RN/LPN Display a high degree of professionalism, and display concern in interactions with residents, families, personnel, medical staff, and outside agencies.
♦ Act in the absence of the Director of Nursing when designated.
♦ Responsible for overseeing the function of clinical systems.
♦ An active participant in the daily morning clinical review meeting.
  • Supervision of Patient Care Duties:
♦ Participate in the resident screening process by screening all admissions and readmissions.
♦ Meet regularly with Director of Nursing, other nurse management, and RN/LPN Supervisors to ensure smooth nursing department operations.
♦ Greet new admissions, monitor residents’ care and treatment to ensure residents are receiving necessary and proper care; review nurses notes to ensure proper documentation is maintained relating to residents’ treatments, medications, and conditions.
♦ Make clinical rounds daily and address clinically relevant issues.
♦ Assist in ensuring that RN/LPN Supervisors assume responsibility and accountability for the operation of their assigned nursing unit.
♦ Assist in ensuring that RN/LPN Supervisors assume responsibility and accountability for directly managing and monitoring the care and services provided by the STNA’s. Actively participate in quality assurance monitoring activities.
♦ Assure that STNA’s have current care sheets and consistent assignments daily.
  • Staff Development Functions Duties:
♦ Assist supervisors to pursue self-directed goals for personal and professional growth and staff development.
♦ Identify staffing needs throughout the facility and assists in interviewing, selecting, hiring, orientating, and training of new personnel.
♦ Assist in developing, implementing, and presenting educational programs and required in-services to ensure that all nursing staff are educated in a manner to optimize the quality of care and adhere to local, state, and federal regulations.
Personnel Functions Duties:
♦ Assist in the recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, evaluating, discipline, and terminating of nursing services personnel.
♦ Assist in the scheduling of nursing personnel including work hours, vacations, holidays, and shift and work assignments, etc. to ensure adequate staffing and to expedite work.
♦ Assist with preparing periodic performance evaluations with the understanding the evaluations directly impact wage increases, and includes performance improvement plans.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement Functions Duties:
♦ Assist in ensuring that quality improvement measures CCare continually maintained.
♦ Maintain a rapport with all departments to ensure that a team effort is achieved in developing a comprehensive action plan for the facility to use as a tool for providing superior services in the facility. Residents’ Rights’ Functions Duties:
♦ Maintain resident confidentiality.
♦ Treat residents with kindness, dignity, and respect.
♦ Know, comply with, and ensure that all nursing service personnel know and comply with the Residents’ Bill of Rights.
♦ Monitor nursing services to ensure that the residents' needs and rights are met.
♦ Review promptly records of all resident complaints and grievances, report them to the Director of Nursing Services, and maintain a written record of such grievances.
  • HIPAA Compliance Function Duties:
♦ Maintain the confidentiality and security of all PHI, (Personal Healthcare Information) as defined by HIPAA, (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act); Unless the resident or employee consents and authorizes the use or disclosure of PHI or that is permitted by the HIPAA Privacy Standard. This includes healthcare information oral or written which is individual identifiable information relating to a resident’s or employee’s health and healthcare needs or payment for healthcare.
♦ Follow Atrium Centers’ policies and procedures written and utilized to comply with these standards.
Other Job Functions
  • Care Plan and Assessment Functions Duties:
♦ As needed, assist in developing an assessment and care plan that identifies the nursing problems, medical problems, and needs of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for each problem.
♦ Encourage residents and their families to participate in the development and review of the care plans.
♦ Review nurses’ summaries and monitor residents to determine if the care plans are being followed and if each resident’s needs are being met.
♦ Participate in assessing, reviewing, and revising care plans as required.
♦ Develop and maintain a rapport with all services to ensure that a team effort is achieved in developing comprehensive care plans for all residents.
  • Committee Functions Duties:
♦ Attend and participate in various committees and meetings of the facility.
♦ Provide written and/or oral reports to the Director of Nursing Services.
♦ Evaluate and implement recommendations pertaining to Nursing Services.
♦ Attend all mandatory in-services.
♦ Participate in the Corporate Compliance program and abide by the Corporate Standards of Conduct policies.
  • Safety and Sanitation Functions Duties:
♦ Assist in developing, implementing and maintaining safety standards and programs for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases.
♦ Follow and instruct nursing personnel procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
♦ Ensure that personnel understand and follow departmental policies and procedures, Universal Precautions, established safety rules, and, fire and disaster procedures.
♦ Ensure cleanliness of Nursing Services work areas.
  • All Other Duties as Assigned
