Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications and New Digital Media's primary purpose is to convey stories, create content and handle primary sports information responsibilities for Denver's 2023 national semifinalist women's lacrosse program, men's OR women's basketball, volleyball and two non-ticketed sports to be determined throughout the interview process.
Essential Functions
  • Sponsorship - Carry out sponsorship agreements on game programs, the website and social media.
  • Oversees assigned varsity sport programs as sports information director which includes, but is not limited to: write, edit and disseminate press releases and feature stories, as well as design media brochures and game programs. Answer media questions, plan photography sessions, and cover assigned sporting events. Coordinate media relations, social media and statistical services for all home contests for assigned sports. Travel for postseason competitions to cover University of Denver intercollegiate programs locally, regionally and nationally. Serve as liaison to opposing institutions, media, coaches, conference offices, and the NCAA relative to exchanging statistical data and information related to sport-specific honors. Nominate student-athletes for various honors and awards and publicize winners of awards.
  • Ticket Sales - Assist in communicating about ticket sales and ticket deals throughout the year.
  • Promotes revenue-generating opportunities for assigned sports in conjunction with other external units including but not limited to:
  • Marketing - Assist with student-athlete selection for marketing pieces, and work with public address on name pronunciations and other elements.
  • Prepare for and contribute to weekly unit meetings to assist in the execution of the department's overall communications plan.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications for Hockey on tasks for the unit's work study students, and assigning gameday student staffing needs for all 18 of Denver's sport programs.
  • Development - Assist in spreading the Division's message with development-related efforts.
  • Technical Services - Broadcast elements and other related items.
  • Creative - Assisting in coming up with story ideas to tell the student-athletes and programs' stories for assigned sports.
  • Lead efforts, in conjunction with other units, in keeping up general facility appearance in trophy cases and other display cases up to date to better represent our building. Also coordinate team photos wall, assigned sport media days and athletic-department wide headshot day with University of Denver photographer.
  • Event Management - Assist in event management to ensure proper game day operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Management - Ability to staff events and manage student employees and interns during assigned contests. Compliance Knowledge: Knowledge of sport rules, regulations and processes of University, Division, conference affiliations, and the NCAA.
  • Mathematical Skills - Strong basic math skills, including the ability to understand, analyze and manage zero-based budget, and statistical data.
  • Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of requests furnished in written or oral form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Computer and Design Skills - Strong computer skills; must be able to use publishing and design software (Adobe Photoshop and InDesign preferred) to create media guides, brochures, game programs and social media content. Basic video editing skills (Adobe Premiere preferred). Handle sensitive and confidential matters and situations.
  • Language skills - Ability to respond to common inquiries and complaints from the public, media, etc.; ability to write press releases, team bios, quotes and articles for publications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum one- or two-years' experience in communications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in communications
  • Master's degree
Working Environment
Standard office environment. Noise and stress level is moderate to high and fluctuates through the season. Possible Outdoor work in all types of weather. Pres boxes and press rows
Physical Activities
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate work-related equipment; effectively communicate verbally with all constituents. The employee must be able to move about the office with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 pounds. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Weekends and Evenings during the Varsity Sports Seasons.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 8.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $52,000-$60,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
