Job Description

POSITION INFORMATION: Reports to the Assistant Vice President for Administration & Finance and Controller. Provides leadership and coordination of the implementation and maintenance of all core accounting and reporting, accounts payable, travel, capital assets, and inventory. Assists in leading the campus accounting and reporting processes to ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards. Collaborates with the Controller and other key campus stakeholders to ensure effective accounting, reporting, compliance and internal controls that support high performance and goal achievement.
DUTIES:

  • Compliance: Ensures compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB).
  • Innovation: Identifies opportunities to innovate, streamline and improve financial processes.
  • Financial: Manages the accurate and timely entry of all financial transactions into the enterprise accounting system.
  • Policies and Procedures: Ensures policies, procedures, systems and internal controls are based on accounting and best practices and supports the strategic goals of a leading research university and/or academic medical center.
  • Collaboration: Collaborates with the Financial Systems, Research Financial Services, Information Technology, Payroll, Human Resources, Student Financial Services and campus stakeholders on a regular basis on financial system projects and implementations.
  • Audits: Coordinates external audit activities. Collaborates with the University Internal Audit Department to provide financial information for internal audits.
  • Internal Control.: Assists the Controller with establishing and monitoring an appropriate financial and reporting internal control structure.
  • Supervisory: Assists with the recruiting, training, and supervising of Financial Services staff. Evaluates staff levels and develops projections to meet operational needs.
  • Managing: Assists the Controller with managing and directing finance and accounting, financial reporting, tax, accounts payable, travel, financial systems, capital assets, and inventory.
  • As Needed: Performs related duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
  • Reports: Manages the accurate and timely completion of internal and external financial reports.
Job Requirements

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field with a minimum of 18 hours accounting course work

Experience: 60 months experience as a professional Accountant

Equivalency / Substitution: Will accept 48 months experience in lieu of BS Degree for a total of 108 months of experience.

Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Preferences: Master's Degree in Accounting or Business Administration

Supervision: 24 months in a supervisory or management role

Skills:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the mission, goals, organization, and operational/financial infrastructure of a public university.
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement short and long range goals.
  • Strong analytical and organizational planning skills and basic human resources development and management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of institutional policies and procedures and the regulatory environment.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Federal and State financial laws, regulations, and operating guidelines as they pertain to the university.
  • Ability to review and assess the operational and financial viability of new and existing contractual arrangements.
  • Advanced knowledge of assets and funds management principles, methods, and techniques. Understanding of internal control structures and enterprise risks assessment.
