Purpose of Position

The University of North Dakota Department of Athletics is currently recruiting for an Assistant Coach - Men's Hockey. The purpose of this position is to assist the Head Men’s Ice Hockey coach with all aspects of a Division I program. This position provides comprehensive assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing comprehensive instruction to the team. This position will provide instruction to the team that includes teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills as well as providing general safety instruction. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
  • Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities, as assigned.
  • Assisting with all facets of coaching at all UND games and practices.
  • Other fundraising duties as assigned by Head Coach.
  • Handle documentation for each prospective student athlete in accordance with NCAA, and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.
  • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
  • Assist with all aspects of camps/clinics, as assigned.
  • Design instructional/training in-season/off-season specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
  • Assist strength coach for weightlifting and conditioning practices, as needed.
  • Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
  • Follow all NCAA, conference, UND recruiting rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits, as assigned.
  • Assist with maintaining contact with alumni and boosters, as assigned.
  • Assisting with statistics at all UND games and practices.
  • Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
  • Assist with team travel and/or scouting, as assigned.
  • Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student athletes on safe training and exercise techniques.
  • Follow all university hiring procedures, as assigned.
  • Teach basic physical health concepts (to include nutritional education) specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
  • Assist/run practices under the direction of the Head Coach.
  • Recruit quality prospective student-athletes for the sport program.
  • Assist with social media for the men’s ice hockey program, when applicable.
  • Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety of the student-athletes.
  • Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental well-being of the student-athletes.
  • Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes.
  • Handle day-to-day correspondence, both email and print mail, as assigned.
  • Prepare Job Data Hire forms for each camp coach/counselor, monitor/approve all Hourly Reporting forms, if applicable.

Required Competencies

  • Must have effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
  • Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and und rules and regulations.
  • Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student athletes including having a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and computer skills.
  • Ability to teach and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience with NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check (CHBC).
  • Three (3) years of experience from the following combination: Junior Ice Hockey coaching, NCAA Division I or III Ice Hockey coaching, professional Ice Hockey coaching, and/or professional Ice Hockey playing experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in use of XOS Hockey Software/DVSport or related analytical video software.
  • Experience working with NCAA Division I Hockey programs with at least two (2) years of progressive experience.
  • Experience and development in coaching defensemen.
