Job Description
The Assistant Buyer is responsible for procurement activity for a variety of off the shelf materials, specialty items, and product services. Using a well-developed supplier base, the buyer will be responsible to place purchase orders to ensure the best quality, delivery and total cost to support manufacturing requirements. In this role, the buyer will track part shortages and respond to a variety of reports to support key metrics such as supplier quality, cost reduction, inventory turns, and process improvement initiatives.


  • Work with Planning and Supplier Engineering to communicate supplier issues and to establish alternate buying methods as appropriate
  • Responsible for assuring that purchase orders are placed and that deliveries are scheduled and maintained in order to meet production requirements
  • Process non-conforming materials and request root cause corrective action with suppliers to prevent reoccurrences
  • Request, prepare, and analyze quote packages for internal customers
  • Expedite current deliveries and adjust purchase order dates to comply with business requirements. Maintain accurate information for proper payment to suppliers
  • Work with suppliers to achieve 100% quality,100% on time delivery, and best total cost for the company
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Review MRP (Material Resource Planning) requirements on a regular basis for assigned items/materials/services and react accordingly in order to maintain inventory levels based on established guidelines to support manufacturing demand.


Required Competencies


  • Able to use basic math skills such as addition. Subtraction, multiplication and division to analyze pricing
  • Strong ability to communicate in verbal and written form. Strong ability to follow verbal or written instructions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Able to offer and/or implement suggestions to improve processes
  • Ability to pressure suppliers to explain quality and pricing concerns. Ability to gather facts and use them to debate and negotiate best cost for Zygo
  • Able to solve problems by collecting data and using critical thinking skills
  • Able to understand engineering drawings and/or bills of materials (BOMs) sufficient enough to facilitate preparing quote packages that include all relevant documentation
  • Ability to organize reports, folders, and communications from multiple sources. Strong ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
