About The Position


The Architectural Designer provides intermediate to advanced-level professional architectural planning work by assisting in the programming, design, and schematic documentation of proposed capital and tenant improvement project scopes. Such documentation will facilitate the advancement of approved project scopes into technical documents that can be referenced in budgeting and utilized by architectural / engineering consultants and contractors toward eventual construction implementation.

We Require


  • Four years of experience engaged in the practice of architecture and/or building design under the direct supervision of a licensed architect
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Planning, Design, or a closely related field
  • Post-secondary education may substitute for two years of the experience requirement 
  • Must be able to pass applicable background check for access to secured County facilities


We Also Value


  • Experience producing construction document plan sets and submitting them for review and approval by Authorities Having Jurisdiction
  • Licensed Architect in the state of Arizona
  • NCARB certification or registered candidate towards eventual licensing via an established NCARB-AXP record is preferred but not required


Job Contributions


  • Identify and analyze applicable building code and ADA accessibility issues observed within the existing building context, where the proposed project scope(s) are intended. Review such with Planning and Development Department for interpretations when necessary
  • Interface with Facilities Management interior designers, project managers, estimators and operations & maintenance personnel as required in the programming, design and preparation of architectural drawings for proposed projects
  • Represent the Design Division and the overall Facilities Management Department through product delivery and interactions with County stakeholders/end-users, consultants, vendors, and/or contractors
  • Engage delegated stakeholders/end-users from County departments to program the requested scope of the project; assess the built context; and identify budgetary parameters to be then conveyed through schematic architectural design drawing(s) to stakeholders/end-users
  • Work closely with the Design Division Manager/Senior Architect to prepare schematic architectural drawings for the budgeting and implementation of potential capital and/or tenant improvement projects for stakeholder/end-user approval
  • Review archived as-built and record drawings of existing facilities, in which proposed project scope(s) are requested and supplement such information as required with self-performed field surveys, dimensioning, and photographic documentation to be used in developing proposed schematic design solutions and the corresponding drawings
  • Research potential products and materials for proposed schematic design solutions
  • Produce spreadsheet tables of required floor area based on departmental function and employee count and projected growth to determine needed floor area for moves and relocation of County departments


Working Conditions


  • Must be able to work in a normal indoor office environment. Must be able to manage frequent interruptions, time pressures, high work volumes, multiple and complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, interaction with end users and the public. Must be able to concentrate, make decisions and be a team player while working in close proximity to others
  • The job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. Ability to move objects by lifting floor to waist (up to 30 pounds), pushing/pulling (up to 30 pounds) short distances (25 feet or less), speaking, hearing, seeing, reading, and precise dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 20% walking/standing
