Job Description
What You Will Do
The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO) and is assigned to the Engineering Project Delivery (ES-IPD) Group. This group is responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The positions are in nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 26 miles of the Laboratory. The program elements include processes, standards, training, and qualifications that are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.
  • For external design execution, this may require management of the contract; coordination of design deliverables; supporting design progress through team meetings; obtaining and aiding in resolving LANL subject matter expert comments.
  • Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements; reviewing project engineering progress against approved schedules and budgets; evaluating changes; and taking corrective action when required.
  • Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives such as building official, fire marshal, electrical safety officer, etc. for identification of requirements, permitting, and issues resolution.
  • Aid in the development of technical documents that define the project such as requirements and criteria document, scope of work, functions and requirements, alternative studies and other.
  • As a Project Engineering Architect, you will act as the technical representative for architectural and engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be expected to work with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes engineers, architects, customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others.
  • Aid in project definition including space programming, siting, planning and requirements development.
  • Develop cost estimates with the Engineering Services technical team for project support.
  • For internally produced design, this may include management of design schedule, determining design team staffing needs, managing costs, quality checks, and overall delivery.
  • Resolve field-initiated questions on engineering, visits jobsite, aide in the resolution of construction related technical issue; resolve a wide range of design and constructability issues in creative ways that adhere to codes and standards; and provide resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems.
  • Make recommendations to engineering management on project assignments of key personnel and requests for specialized professional services.
  • Facilitating engineering design efforts and design reviews for both internal and external engineering design teams including assuring comments are implemented by facilitating the resolution of comments and ensure delivery of the design product.
  • Work with the integrated project team to assure substantial completion, punch-list, as built and turnover process is correctly implemented for project closeout; and work with document management representatives to ensure all project documentation is complete and stored in the appropriate repositories.
  • Manage technical requirements for construction, including coordinating designer-constructor interface, design changes, submittal reviews, inspection documentation, request for information (RFI), nonconformances, commissioning, and certificate of occupancy process.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of project design processes and procedures, including industry codes and standards.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems, building codes, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to architectural design and execution.
  • Basic experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting technical aspects of a project.
  • Knowledge of NQA-1 quality requirements.
  • Desktop automation skills required (MS Office Suite)
  • Adhere to and enforce the LANL engineering and architectural policies, programs, procedures, and practices applicable to work at LANL with direct authority to assure the requirements of the LANL Conduct of Engineering program are met.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in architectural consulting, design, and construction management. Basic knowledge and experience with facility and office design/layout.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from a NAIA accredited university and application to obtain a New Mexico architect registration.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to obtain (or in process of obtaining) New Mexico architect registration.
  • Knowledge of DOE O 413.B-Program and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards (https://engstandards.lanl.gov/index.shtml) using tools such as MS Project or Oracle P6.
  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
