Responsibilities:
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are currently hiring a APL Scientist 1 to support our global software client onsite in Vancouver, Washington. This role is technical in nature and the ideal candidate would benefit from experience in an ever-evolving R&D team culture. This is a long-term position with day shift available working at the client-site with a Monday through Friday work week.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
  • Write processes and operating instructions for using machines & test equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance, in accordance with test equipment user guides. For the 3D X-ray machine, this can only be performed under direct supervision of technical staff.
  • Provide suggestions on process & test improvements to further enhance customer test results.
  • Perform complex testing tasks at the direction of the engineering staff, including printbar air gain measurements, images with/without measurements and slice movies generated by the 3D X-ray machine.
  • Observe and analyze test results or test output and report findings & observations to the engineering staff. Specifically, for the 3D X-ray machining identify voids or cracks in components/ parts being analyzed, determine if parts are in spec from a metrology standpoint, directly measure motor brush wear, printbar air gain, and electronic open/short/alignment analysis.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • General understanding of the operation and maintenance of machines and test equipment.

  • Minimum educational level expectation is a 2-year STEM degree. 4-year bachelor’s degree in Materials Science/Physics/Engineering is ideal. On-the-job work experience and job skills training in lieu of a college diploma is acceptable.
  • General knowledge of technical & operational understanding of the following test equipment is preferred:
    • Operation of the GE L300 3D X-ray System, including Volume Graphics Analysis Software and CAD Software or equivalent.
    • L&W Acoustic Modulus Tester
    • Pick Roller Tester
    • Instron Tester
    • Bruker UMT
    • Dillon Mechanical Tester
    • Permeance tester
    • High-Speed Video
    • Scanning Electron Microscope
    • Testing Machine Tribometer
    • Optical Microscopes (including light polarization & light/dark field illumination
  • Able to multi-task and prioritize workflow and execute test plans based on engineering test requests.
  • Scanning Electron Microscope

  • Ability to read and interpret technical instructions.
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot independently and with a team.
  • Operation of the GE L300 3D X-ray System, including Volume Graphics Analysis Software and CAD Software or equivalent.

  • Optical Microscopes (including light polarization & light/dark field illumination
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Able to independently make decisions, take appropriate action and share learned skills.
  • Experience working in an R&D testing environment.
  • Knowledge of writing engineering reports is desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare detailed written engineering test reports, which may include translation of complex scientific terms into more easily understandable language.
  • Preferred to have experience in data capture & collection systems in an experimental lab environment.
  • Intermediate level knowledge of MS-Word and MS-Excel including formula creation & pivot tables.
  • Testing Machine Tribometer
  • Some experience in a physics/materials science lab or engineering setting is preferred. Work experience requirements can be waived/reduced depending on education qualifications, skillset, industry standard certifications or other related industry work experience

  • Good verbal communications, independent problem-solving and soft skills.
