Job Description
SUMMARY: The Animal Welfare Manager is responsible for overall management for all animal welfare activities at the facility, as well as direct supervision of shift superintendents in livestock. Building and maintaining relationships and a positive relationship with the USDA team is a key aspect of the role.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

Animal Welfare
  • Oversee Trainers in the Barn and Animal Welfare training department.
  • Oversee the compliance and enforcement of humane handling policies in the Livestock area including transport companies.
  • Ensure Transport Quality Assurance testing of all truck drivers in accordance with guidelines set by the National Pork Board.
  • Create weekly updates to ensure freshness to Animal Welfare policies.
  • Responsible for creating best practice training materials both electronically and power point form. Work with Triumph foods and Seaboard Foods to ensure sameness at all three processing facilities.

Activities Related to Supervision:
  • Manage and coordinate work schedules for the livestock staff as dictated by the plant operating requirements in absence of Barn Manager.
  • Manage hiring, evaluating, training, discipline and all related employment activities for livestock receiving, barn and staging staff.
  • Administer all human resource policies and procedures required at the supervisor level.
  • Participate in writing and auditing Standard Operating Procedures in all areas of Livestock.
  • Participate and provide support for any third party audits.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university preferred; or (4) four or more years related experience in pork procurement industry with a focus on Animal Welfare practices or the combination of education and experience that enables performance in all aspects of the position, including supervisory experience. Well-developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a team of employees.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. Ability to effectively manage time and meet all specified deadlines.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language and procedure manuals. Must be able to effectively communicate with Hog Suppliers, Truckers and other industry personnel as well as with USDA Inspection team.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Strong mathematical skills with the ability to apply to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems. Display patience if faced with any Animal Welfare complex situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use computers with the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and must be able to effectively work in a normal production environment where temperatures and noise levels may vary.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management.
50% of the time will be in the Livestock and staging area working with and mentoring Superintendents and Supervisors.
30% of the time reviewing Animal Welfare Training materials with Trainer.
10% Working with USDA Inspection Team.
5% staying connected with the Pork Industry as it relates to additions, changes and additions to Animal Welfare Standards
5% of the time focused on enriching STF`s culture as well as community enrichment.
