Job Description
Summary

Performs routine animal care and related duties at the Regional animal shelter. Cleans and maintains kennel areas and performs related shelter duties. Workers carry out daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations. Includes work on weekends and holidays.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs shelter duties including taking reports from the public, receiving animals brought to the shelter, preparing adoption paperwork, reclaiming animals to their owners, and transporting animals to veterinarians.
  • Cleans and sanitizes food and water containers.
  • Assists Animal Shelter Technicians as assigned.
  • Cleans and sanitizes cages and kennel areas and performs general housekeeping duties.
  • Maintains appropriate feeding schedule and records for the animals at the facility.
  • Oversees public interaction with adoptable animals.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Ensures adoptable pets are in cages at local partner stores. Transport animals as assigned.
  • Performs minor facility maintenance.
  • Observes and reports kenneled/caged animal health concerns to appropriate staff person.
  • Maintains proper inventory levels of cleaning and other supplies. Informs supervisor when reordering is necessary.
  • Identifies potential problems with animals such as those that could affect their adoptability (health issues, behavior/ temperament problems etc.) and notify the supervisor/technicians when these conditions are noted-
  • Launders animal bedding.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Six (6) months of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Special Requirements/Qualifications:

Must be willing to receive Rabies pre-exposure and Tetanus vaccinations. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION, AND EMPLOYEES IN THIS POSITION ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING.
Subject to work weekends, holidays and beyond the normal scheduled hours of work.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to carry out daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations. Includes work on weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and effectively.
  • Ability to clean kennels efficiently.
  • Knowledge of the basic methods and procedures of kennel cleaning.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.

Additional Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is performed in office, shelter, surroundings, and outside in varying weather conditions. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 70 pounds; climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; and requires the ability to speak normally and to use normal or aided vision and hearing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may be performed outside in a variety of weather conditions. Worker is continuously exposed to chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and subject to injuries at any given time.

RETIREE HEALTH INSURANCE – Health Reimbursement Arrangement. New hires who elect health insurance coverage with Charles County Government (CCG) will be enrolled in a Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Account (VEBA). Upon retirement or separation from employment, you will be able to use the funds in the VEBA account to pay for your health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses. You are required to contribute $25.92 per pay period (via payroll deduction). CCG will also make a contribution of $77.44 per pay period ($2,013.44/year).
