Job Description

Performs intermediate protective service work in the enforcement of ordinances regulating the keeping of animals within the County; does related work as assigned involved an element of personal danger. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Chief Animal Control Officer. Must be available to work on any day of the week, including holidays and weekends.

Salary for this position:

  • Full salary range for this position is $58,9912 - $99,021.73
  • Additional compensation may be earned via shift schedule, night differential, holiday and premium pay.
  • $28.36/hour or $58,997.12 with no prior experience.
  • Starting at $28.36/hour or $58,997.12 + 50% credit given for years of DCJS Law Enforcement service.
Examples of Duties
  • Assist humane officer;
  • Clean kennels;
  • Receive and investigate citizen complaints relating to dog and other animals during regular working hours and after hours;
  • Respond to animal control calls; patrolling to observe animal violations; picking up animals running loose, sick or injured animals; investigate animal bites; preparing and maintaining records and files.
  • Provide public information concerning County does;
  • Issue summons and appears in court on a variety of cases involving enforcement of Animal Control Ordinances;
  • Other Law Enforcement duties as assigned.
  • Investigate and process dog bite cases;
  • Perform related tasks as required;
  • Set up trap;
  • Carry out euthanasia procedures;
  • Keep appropriate records;
  • Feed and water animals at the shelter;
  • Impound abandoned and stray dogs and other animals;
Typical Qualifications

Graduation from high school or high school equivalency (GED).

Some experience in work involving the care of animals.

Experience in dealing with the public.

Thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing the control of dogs; thorough knowledge of the geography of the County; general knowledge of the care, control and handing of dogs and other animals; ability to recognize rabies symptoms and some knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed; ability to deal tactfully with the public; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle.

Supplemental Information

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s Office training and education requirements for the position. Ability to possess an Animal Control Training Certificate.
