Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Coordinates all aspects of the on-site and off-site animal adoption, rescue and foster program
Coordinates the care of and preparation of animals for foster or adoption
Provides care to domestic animals; cleans and disinfects cages and pens, administers various forms of medications, and transfers animals between quarters
Ensures that staff at the adoption sites appropriately care for animals and assist the public with adoption questions
Coordinates all equipment and materials needed for various adoption, rescue and foster events and activities
Provides support, information and scheduling for foster families and organizations

Examples of Duties

UNDER ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISION
ADOPTION PROGRAM
Administers behavior and temperament assessments and selects animals for the adoption program
Collects data, photographs animals, and posts information in order to maintain adoption websites with current adoptable animal information
Collaborates with other divisions to plan and develop adoption projects and programs
Arranges to or escorts the public through the facility to view animals available for adoption, and answers questions concerning operations and procedures
Consults with animal welfare groups and other placement organizations to find suitable homes for adoptable animals
Assists in determining which animals are put into the adoption program and which are to be transferred or euthanized
Observes and monitors the behavior and health of animals to determine whether to request veterinary treatment, grooming and/or behavior assessment
Completes forms and documents concerning adoptions, enters all information into the database and collects adoption fees
Schedules all medical care and treatment, spaying and neutering of adoption animals
Assists in determining which animals are publicized in weekly adoption segments and prepares the information and animals for the segments
Accompanies pet owners through the kennels to assist them in locating their lost animals and completes forms to release claimed animals to their owners upon verification of ownership, current animal license and payment of fees or charges
Provides advice and support to adopters after the adoption process
Cleans and disinfects kennel cages, pens, and transport units using water hose, floor brush and chemicals
Performs or assists in the euthanasia of animals
RESCUE AND FOSTER PROGRAM
Coordinates rescue and volunteer foster programs including recruitment, placement and documentation
Contacts rescues and sends transfer information in a timely manner to support departmental needs
Coordinates with rescues and foster families for animal pick up and transfer to final destination
Ensures animals to be transferred or fostered receive necessary medical treatment needed for transport or care
Oversees data input and maintains animal status in rescue and foster database
Maintains lists of rescues and foster family requirements and availability
Provides ongoing assistance, coaching, and support to foster families
Maintains contact with transfers and foster families to ensure animals receive needed care
Ensures vaccines, dewormer, and any medication is administered to animals to be adopted, transferred or fostered as per the indirect supervision of a veterinarian
Performs related work

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or the equivalent

WORK EXPERIENCE
One year of customer service, animal care, animal control, animal handling, or veterinary assistance experience

EQUIVALENCY
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must provide one's own source of transportation
Must work a varied schedule
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess EBI (euthanasia by injection) certification issued by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners or obtain within one year of employment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
