Job Description

Job Title: School Nurse for After School Program (2 positions: one position at Primary and Intermediate School, K-5 grades, and one position at 6-8 grade Middle School)

Reports to: H&H Coordinator, Lead Nurse, and Director of HR and Student Services

Assignment: Homework and Health (H&H) after school program nurse

Wage/Hour Status: non-exempt hourly rate of $27 / hour

Pay Grade: $27.00 per hour

Terms of Employment:

This FLSA non-exempt position (hourly) is on a work calendar that mimics the school year. This position is part-time, two hours per day from 4-6 p.m. when students are in attendance.


Primary Purpose:

Implement a comprehensive program of health services for the homework and health after school program. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.


Education/Certification:

  • Valid licensed vocational nurse or registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
  • CPR and AED Certification

Experience:

  • Two years nursing experience, preferably in community or school health

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Nursing Services

  • Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.
  • Serve as a health advocate for students.
  • Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.
  • Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health programs and make changes based on findings.
  • Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
  • Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).

Instruction

  • Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students, teachers, and staff.
  • Provide health education to individuals and groups.
  • Educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.

Consultation

  • Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.
  • Serve as a health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
  • Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  • Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.

Administration

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the health services area.
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to the H&H Coordinator.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional Development

  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Maintain all necessary professional certifications and requirements to fulfill the duties of the after school program nurse

Equipment:

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.


Environment:

May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district-wide travel.


Working Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
