We\'re committed to bringing passion and energy to Colorado School of Mines.The Writing Center at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) supports students with their writing and oral communication projects, at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to final revisions. Consultants work with students in one-on-one sessions to provide tailored support that allows them to develop the long-term skills they need to become effective communicators. Although consultants primarily work with undergraduate and graduate students, they may also work with faculty and other members of the campus community. Appointments take place both online and in-person during writing center hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm, and Sunday-Thursday, 6:00-9:00pm. Weekly shifts typically range from 10-20 hours/week. Consultants report to the Writing Center Director.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Offer up to 20 tutoring hours for one-on-one writing center support each week via online or in-person sessions. Provide scaffolded support to students in writing center appointments, allowing them to develop their overall writing and communication skills on topics ranging from organization and audience to syntax and grammar. Adapt instruction to the level of the student and the type of assignment, supporting students with a wide variety of writing projects ranging from papers and theses to grant proposals and journal articles. Maintain detailed client report forms after each session on the online scheduling platform. Attend writing center meetings.


Additional responsibilities Additional responsibilities may include designing/delivering workshops, giving in-class presentations, supporting outreach events, and other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: M.A. in a related field Previous experience as a tutor, consultant, or instructor Familiarity with stylistic conventions and academic expectations of both technical and academic writing and communication


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work with a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate student projects, from lab reports and research essays to thesis chapters and poster presentations. Most of these assignments are STEM focused but could include a variety of academic disciplines and professional documents. Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing


Preferred Qualifications Education and Experience: Experience designing and delivering workshops for a variety of audiences. Extensive experience working as a consultant or tutor in a writing center


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Skilled in online scheduling platforms such as WConline Extensive knowledge of writing and oral communication projects within STEM fields Knowledge of writing center/composition pedagogy and practice


JOB DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Requirements: This position can include both in-person shifts at the Writing Center and online shifts using the WConline platform.
