Job Description
POSITION: Activity Assistant


DEPARTMENT: Activities


RESPONSIBLE TO: Activity Director


Job Summary


To assist Activity Director with all activities during the week and some weekends. Responsible for planning, organizing, promoting, and managing activities for the residents and in absence of the Activity Director coordinate all activity department.


Specific Duties


  • Will deliver and read mail, deliver personal items, and maintain the necessary records in accordance with regulatory policy State, Federal, and Nursing Home.
  • Maintain records of all Activity attendance and will notify Activity Director of any unusual observations.
  • Responsible in assisting Activity Director in all aspects of organizing, planning and presenting activities.
  • Responsible in developing and organizing volunteers and keeping records of volunteer hours on volunteer sign-in sheets.
  • Keep Activity Schedules updated.
  • Will encourage activities in resident room. (Example; cards, sewing, checkers, etc.)
  • Encourage Residents personal interests and development to optimize physical and emotional functioning.


Activities Assistant Responsibilities


  • Excellent resource management, computer, record keeping, interpersonal, decision making, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Reporting medical concerns or observations.
  • Adaptability and strong organization and time management skills.
  • Providing participants with instructions for the event.
  • Observing participants at events gauge their enjoyment and obtain their feedback to improve events.
  • Patience and compassion when dealing with others, especially those who are sick, injured, elderly, or from diverse backgrounds.
  • Willingness to adhere to and enforce all safety policies and procedures.
  • Flexibility to work when needed, especially evenings, weekends, or early mornings.
  • Adhering to and enforcing all safety procedures.
  • Ensuring that events are well-provisioned, the event staff is trained and prepared, and that the event takes place on time and within budget.
  • Planning and facilitating daily, weekly, and monthly events to encourage socialization, relaxation, and recreation.
  • Keeping records regarding event planning resources, participant interest, and other notable information, such as injuries or behavioral incidents.
  • Handling planning to make the event possible, such as making phone calls, advertising, managing inventory and budgets, training and motivating volunteers or employees, and coordinating transportation.
  • Physical finesses, ability to walk, dance, stand, lift, or meet other physical demands.
  • Implementing activities that accommodate those with special needs.


Job Qualifications


  • Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Job Knowledge: Familiarity with resident needs and desires; understand purposes and results of games, crafts, and activities; and be conscious of feelings, emotions, and concerns of residents.
  • Experience: At least one year’s experience in a nursing facility, a long-term care setting or a recreational arts/crafts program.


Physical Requirements Of Job Functions


  • Continuous balancing, manipulation with fingers, grasping and distinguishing of colors.
  • Frequent working in kneeling position.
  • Applicant is required to drive the community bus transporting residents to outings
  • Frequent working with body bent at waist.
  • Frequent working with arms above waist and occasionally above shoulder height.
  • Frequent standing, sitting, and stooping; occasional pushing and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting 25 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching above shoulder level.
  • Occasional crawling and frequent climbing stairs.


Full vaccination against COVID-19 or a medical/religious exemption is required.


Salary/ Wage Range


Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
