Job Description


The ACORNS Social Work Supervisor (Addressing Crises through Outreach, Referrals, Networking, and Service) position entails supervision of an integrated professional team of social workers, providing intervention and connections to social services for individuals impacted by homelessness, living with mental illness, and/or living with substance use disorders. Work includes managing team to meet goals and collaborating with internal and external partners to advocate for target populations. The ACORNS team serves to bridge the gap between law enforcement and social services, wherein the ideal candidate will have a passion for providing intervention services to these populations and demonstrable prior success with coalition building with law enforcement.
Work Hours:
This position works from Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and requires flexibility to work rotating hours on short notice as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Document and maintain records in a manner that assures compliance with all agency policies, program procedures and local, state, and federal regulations, including mandatory abuse reporting laws and HIPAA requirements
  • Supervise ACORNS Social Workers, including oversight of caseloads, weekly referral consultation, success metrics reporting, and conducting specialized academy training for recruits and in-service training for employees
  • Provide consultation concerning populations in the Raleigh area impacted by homelessness and mental illness and advocate for the ethical treatment of all individuals with access to community resources and services that ensure continuity of care
  • Receive referrals and work with mental health professionals, the criminal justice system and community partners to determine an approach to each unique situation
  • Respect rights and responsibilities of referred individuals and demonstrate professional boundaries and ethics
  • Collaborate with ACORNS Team to provide 24/7 emergency response services to individuals experiencing mental health crises and housing emergencies in the Raleigh area
  • Engage in on-site risk/threat assessment for individual’s harm to self or others while considering the individual’s unique life experiences and referral information, consider and articulate potential outcomes of various interventions, and formulate the least intrusive and most supportive course of action

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in social work, human services or field directly related to assignment and five years of related professional planning experience, including supervised work or internship working with families, homelessness, mental illness, and/or substance use.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:

  • Attendance at annual training(s) to maintain social work licensure and other professional licensures/certifications required for this position
  • Basic self-defense training (Provided by City of Raleigh)
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • CPR/First Aid/AED (Provided by City of Raleigh)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work or human services related field
  • Previous supervisory experience and/or experience with leading professionals to meet goals as a team
  • Educational experience that includes psychosocial functioning, assessment skills and intervention strategies, mobilizing individual and/or family strengths, and the role of social, economic, and environmental factors in the development and resolution of person and family problems.

Additional Information

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Access, and Power Point), and common computer practices and protocols
  • Basic self-defense training, or the willingness to acquire this training
  • Evidence-based practices, and strength based case management philosophies and strategies including trauma informed care
  • Fire regulations and evacuation procedures
  • Risk assessment and crisis intervention
  • Community resources, or the ability to become knowledgeable in this topic
  • Police culture, or the willingness to learn this information
Skill In:
  • Reading and comprehending police policies

  • Strong interpersonal, mediation, and conflict-resolution skills, working as part of a team as well as working closely with representatives of other law enforcement, investigative agencies, and marginalized individuals
  • Conducting a mental status assessment and formulate a diagnosis according to the most current DSM
  • Operating in a sometimes ambiguous and frequently changing work environment
  • Organizing information effectively and expressing ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Diagnosing and treating a wide variety of psychological disorders
  • Handling highly confidential and sensitive information with great discretion and keen judgment
  • Operating computer hardware and software at a level needed to effectively perform job functions
  • Developing and implementing tactical plans for interacting with a person in crisis
  • Advocating for populations impacted by homelessness, living with mental illness, and/or substance use disorders
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and will require the ability to traverse uneven terrain when responding to emergency calls or conducting outreach.
