The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School (OSchool) has an excited opportunity for an Academic Coordinator.
General Summary
The Academic Coordinator of the School is a Leadership position. The Academic Coordinator will
have a role supervising members of the instructional staff, representing the school at various
meetings and ensuring the integrity of student reports. Ensuring that Individual Education Plans
are prepared in accordance with all state and federal guidelines and that service delivery within the
school is consistent and is a priority. The Academic Coordinator will assist in organizing and
overseeing all therapeutic interventions utilized within the classrooms and will be responsible for
training members of the school staff and faculty. The Academic Coordinator will effectively
collaborate with families, off-site educational facilities, and home school districts. The Academic
Coordinator will help guide all aspects of the instructional program in order to maintain full
compliance with ISBE and other accrediting agencies.
Essential Functions
30% Educational Leadership:

Qualifications
Master's degree in education, social work, or related field required; PEL (Principal) Illinois
Administrative Certificate required (or eligible based on specified timeline); Illinois State
Teaching License in a minimum of one content area is required; a minimum of three years teaching
children with emotional and behavioral difficulties required; Some administrative experiences
preferred; strong computer skills, strong writing, verbal and organizational skills required.
Applicants should possess a strong commitment to strength perspective, empowering families and
a willingness to work in a highly demanding work situation that requires flexibility and
innovativeness; applicants must possess cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Mental Demands
Ability to manage multiple tasks and to deal with relatively high stress situations. Strong
communication and collaborative skills required. Writing skills for curriculum development
required. Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills are important for the administrative work
as well as in working with the students. Day to day schedule changes and interruptions can be
expected. Flexibility is required.
Physical Demands
In addition to the physical demands of TCI training and guiding interventions, daily use of a
computer, phone, fax machine and copier are required. The above statements are intended to

- Oversee the implementation of curricula and act as an instructional leader for educational
support for teaching staff and act as role model for all instructional staff; and,
- Review history of each new student and help teachers to ensure that each student's needs
- Assist treatment and educational team in developing transferable educational plans for
- Help to establish and administer school-wide crisis intervention strategies and lead
- Ensure that all reports that are generated meet established criteria and are full and
- Act as a leader when supporting classroom management, moments of emotional stress,
15 % Supervision:
- Contribute to daily and weekly team meetings where program is reviewed and updated;
- Meet with team members (as assigned by the principal) on a weekly basis, to provide
efficient classroom routines; and,
- Supervise and observe classroom activities, lessons on a regular basis. Provide support in
- Guide all programming according to Best Practices and Special Education imperatives;
- Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new faculty members; and,
- Assist in the Supervision written reports (including but not limited to academic, program
comprehensive, accurate, and timely.
- Build knowledge in the area of adult learning and development.
- Ensure and contribute to the development of content area specific curriculum for the
lesson plans, scope and sequence materials; and,
- Ensure that all programming options are, in accordance with best practices, modeled
- Oversee the implementation of curricula and act as instructional leader for teachers and
- Assist the school principal and assistant principal with leadership and supervision support
15% Training Program Implementation, Maintenance and Oversight:
- Build annual training schedule & track certification maintenance for all staff and faculty
- Maintain TCI Trainer Certification.
- TCI Trainer: In collaboration with the Crisis Intervention Leaders and Trainers,
members of the staff and faculty are current; and,
- Participate in and model best practices for trainers during trainings when
- Supervise trainers by convening meetings consistently for Trainers and TCI
- Oversee the maintenance of and track all minutes and attendance logs for
10% Accreditation:
- Assist in the supervision and maintenance of in class records and complete timely
- Establishing and maintaining ethical and legal practices in accordance with all current
- Organize all documentation for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), Cognia and
