Job Description
Summary


The College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is seeking a student-centered individual to join our Office of Student Success as an undergraduate Academic Advisor. Academic Advising is a necessary component to student success through course planning, policy/procedure navigation, and major exploration, among other functions. A strong candidate for the position will be a creative thinker, comfortable learning new technologies, detail-oriented, compassionate, and have excellent interpersonal skills.


Responsibilities*


70% Direct Service to Students


  • Provide referrals to students to other resources when needed such as Financial Aid, CAPS, Student Life, etc.
  • Conduct undergraduate student orientations.
  • Advise CEHHS students on degree requirements including course planning, course sequencing, and non-course requirements.
  • Utilize Salesforce to respond to student inquiries and maintain detailed notes from advising appointments.
  • Assist students in identifying majors that align with their future career goals.
  • Create long-term plans for students utilizing the Student Educational Planner in DegreeWorks.
  • Assist students in utilizing campus and college policies and procedures appropriately when needed.
  • Respond to faculty submissions for early alerts related to student performance by providing outreach and advice to students struggling academically.
  • Meet with CEHHS students and prospective students for scheduled and drop in advising appointments.


20% Administrative Duties


  • Work with CEHHS Office of Student Success (OSS) team to implement the office's strategic plan as it relates to the university’s guiding principles.
  • Conduct degree audits to confirm students’ eligibility for graduation.
  • Draft mass communications to students as needed.
  • Collaborate with the CEHHS OSS team to monitor registration issues and barriers experienced by students to make recommendations to Department Chairs.
  • Run, organize, and maintain reports to support the functions of the office and strategic planning metrics.


10% Outreach


  • Represent CEHHS at recruitment events such as open houses, admitted student receptions, and transfer fairs.
  • Maintain relationships with community college advisors to assist in smooth transitions for transfer students.
  • Meet with prospective students to help them identify CEHHS programs relevant to their goals and assist with interpretation of transfer credit.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan and implement welcome week activities.

Required Qualifications*


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Minimum 1 year of academic advising or similar professional experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills


Desired Qualifications*


  • Academic Advising experience at a university
  • Experience with Salesforce, DegreeWorks, and Google Suite
