As the Academic Advisor you will join the Office of Academic Services and provides guidance to undergraduate students relative to their personal and academic goals, interests, and concerns. You will be responsible for a caseload of approximately 400-500 students, academic advisors work with students in all class years and in all undergraduate majors. Academic advisors uphold academic policies, and collaborate with faculty and staff across campus to support students’ well- being and academic success.
Academic Services is home to Academic Advising, Pre-Health Advising, Student Services Support Program (SSSP), and the Myra Kraft Transitional Year Program (MKTYP). It is an innovative, fast-paced, and highly-collaborative department with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Academic Services seeks to promote the growth of students as scholars and citizens through comprehensive advising and support.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a voting member of the Executive Council (EXCO) where routine exceptions to academic policies are made.
  • Maintain accurate records of advising sessions.
  • Be available to parents and families, within the bounds of FERPA, to support students' academic progress.
  • Refer students to (and collaborate with) campus partners - such as Registrar’s Office, Brandeis Counseling Center, Health Center, Dean of Students, CARE Team, Study Abroad, International Students and Scholars Office, Student Financial Services, Hiatt Career Center, Department of Community Living – as part of a holistic advising strategy.
  • Regularly correspond with faculty about students' academic progress, especially those on academic probation.
  • Prepares and presents student petitions to the Committee on Academic Standing (COAS), which reviews non-routine exceptions to academic policies, petitions for students who earn unsatisfactory grades, and petitions for students returning from a leave of absence or withdrawal.
  • Process change of status for students withdrawing or taking a leave of absence, and work closely with students looking to convert their status to a health leave of absence.
  • Counsel students regarding course planning, major/minor options, academic resources and opportunities, graduation requirements, and university policies and culture.
  • Establish strong working relationships with students and assist them in developing and achieving academic goals as part of meeting retention and graduation objectives of Brandeis University.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop creative programming and advising initiatives. Expected to create innovative models that bridge university departments.
  • Provide holistic, developmentally-appropriate guidance and support for undergraduate students at every stage of their college career. Special attention is given to the following populations: students on academic probation, students returning from a (health) leave of absence, transfer students, students receiving mid-semester unsatisfactory grades, etc.
Requirements:
  • Background in program planning and program evaluation strongly preferred.
  • 3-5 years of total work-related experience.
  • Demonstrated work with international students and/or diverse populations, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and be able to work as part of a team within Academic Services and university departments.
  • Master’s degree required.
  • Familiarity with PC computers and knowledge of Microsoft suite programs.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience directly advising, teaching, and/or counseling college-aged populations, or 0 years of experience advising but 4-5 years of experience in higher education (Admissions, Student Life, Residence Life, etc).
