Position Summary:Are you an equity-minded individual excited about helping students achieve their academic goals? The School of Arts & Sciences at UAS is seeking TWO academic advisors to support our students in the departments of Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.


Duties


10 COMMUNICATION AND OUTREACH 1. Keep apprised of current issues, trends, and best practices in academic advising. 2. Collaborate with departments and programs to support communications and outreach to target student populations. 3. Assist in the ongoing assessment and development of the Arts & Sciences advising program to ensure continuous improvement and delivery of best-practice advising in the School. 4. Participate in and collaborate on UAS campus-wide advising initiatives, including but not limited to the regional advising group. 5. At Dean’s request, serve on departmental or campus committees. 6. 15 ASSIST WITH ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT FOR JUNEAU-BASED ARTS & SCIENCES - HUMANITIES, NATURAL SCIENCE, AND SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSE OFFERINGS. 1. Advise on additions, removals and changes to course offerings. 2. Attempt to identify course scheduling conflicts. 3. Provide insight on needed courses for degree completion. 4. Assist in providing the departments with data about their students and degree programs. Essential


15 MANAGEMENT OF JUNEAU-BASED ARTS & SCIENCES STUDENTS FROM ADMISSION TO GRADUATION 1. Development and execution of communication, corresponding, and tracking admitted students dovetailing directly into advising until student transitions to faculty advisor. 2. Collaborate with recruiters and admissions team members. 3. Support enrollment management and recruitment efforts including fielding incoming questions and program inquiries, and advising prospective students, especially transfer students. 4. Assist with Degree Completion process including identifying students who are ready to apply for graduation, reviewing degree progress generally and for more efficient degree completion, assistance with degree completion forms. 20 INTERVENTION, GUIDANCE, AND REFERRAL FOR STUDENTS EXPERIENCING ACADEMIC DIFFICULTIES 1. Contact and advise students identified by the Early Alert system. 2. Assist Arts & Sciences students and faculty in petitions and Financial Aid appeals, as appropriate. 3. Make referrals to appropriate campus/community resources. Referrals may include, but are not limited to, disability support services, career counseling, learning center tutoring, and/or other services supporting student academic success. Essential


40 PROVIDE DIRECT ACADEMIC ADVISING TO ARTS & SCIENCES - HUMANITIES, NATURAL SCIENCE, AND SOCIAL SCIENCE STUDENTS 1. Act as primary advising contact for Juneau-based students new to Arts & Sciences programs. 2. Advise current and prospective students on course offerings, degree program options, and requirements. 3. Review and use available data regarding student’s academic and educational needs, performance, aspirations, and challenges to assist students in the development of suitable educational plans, or to make appropriate referrals. Referrals may include, but are not limited to, faculty advising, career counseling, and/or other services supporting student academic success. 4. Maintain student file database integrity through efficient document handling and record-keeping processes with current data on enrollment, program, and advisor information. 5. Assist students in selecting appropriate courses and other educational experiences; interpreting institutional requirements (e.g., financial aid regulations, academic petition process, etc.); awareness about educational resources available; evaluation of progress toward established goals; development of decision-making skills; reinforce self-directed referral to and use of institutional and community support services. 6. Instruct students in the use of DegreeWorks for academic planning in their major(s). 7. Collaborate with departments to transition students to faculty advisors. Essential


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities


  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment in analyzing situations, making decisions, problem solving, and juggling multiple priorities at once.
  • Effective customer service, interpersonal, and collaborative skills, working with individuals and departments across the university.
  • Knowledge of professional academic advising for undergraduate programs, degrees, and certificates.
  • Knowledge of university admissions, financial aid, and registration processes and procedures, including FERPA.
  • Ability to keep accurate and confidential student records including electronic files, spreadsheets and anecdotal information.
  • Knowledge of communication systems including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate academic information; both in written and verbal forms, to a diverse population.


Preferred Experience & Education


Two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination


of training and experience.


Required Experience & Education


Two years of academic advising experience or two years of working with college students on issues such as advising, academic success, academic coaching, counseling, orientation, student support, or retention services.


Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited post-secondary institution.


Preferred Qualifications


Master's degree in a relevant area of study


Experience using databases like Banner, OnBase, and/or Navigate (EAB)


Knowledge and skills for using DegreeWorks or similar degree tracking system.


Experience working with faculty and students on a college/university campus


Salary Information


These are full-time, 12-month, non-exempt staff positions complete with both a competitive salary andfull employee benefits package (https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php) .
