Department Overview:

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city's largest public arts institutions and are comprised of the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. We are seeking a Building and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair a wide variety of state-of-the-art pumping, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and auxiliary plant machinery and equipment for the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor Museum in Lincoln Park.

The de Young Museum is over 292,000 square feet and includes art galleries, art storage, conservation studios, and a cafe with kitchen and business offices. The Legion of Honor is a historic structure over 117,000 square feet, and also includes art galleries, art storage, a conservation studio, and a cafe with kitchen and business offices. The position will work at both locations, and will be working as part of the Facilities and Operations Department. The position will be responsible for the supervision of staff on a wide variety of projects, as well as the day to day maintenance of the buildings.

Under direction, supervises and is responsible for the various craft workers engaged in building and grounds maintenance, repair and related activities; and performs works as required.

Essential Duties:

1. Supervising, assigning, inspecting, and evaluating the duties and work of various craft, engineering and labor personnel engaged in the maintenance, repair and alteration of buildings and grounds. Approves all work performed at the facilities by craft workers, may supervise housekeeping activities.

2. Inspecting building and grounds to identify deficiencies and recommend improvements; coordinating the maintenance and repair of heating and ventilating systems; refrigeration systems, fire alarms and pumping systems, and kitchen equipment including but not limited to HVAC, VAV, CV, and all Direct Digital Control (DDC), security and card access systems, CCTV systems, computer lighting systems and shade controls, elevators, life safety systems, plumbing and electrical repairs; monitoring and repairing automatic temperature, humidity controls and replacing defective parts; coordinating preventive maintenance by inspecting and testing machinery and equipment; cleaning, maintaining and lubricating plant machinery and equipment; overseeing the maintenance of internal electrical power.

3. Performing project management for facility maintenance projects; assisting with the inspection of facilities for other public agencies; receiving and processing complaints or requests concerning the maintenance and repair of all buildings; coordinating multi-trade and outside contractors.

4. Keeping records of payroll, approving time cards; preparing work orders; preparing various reports and correspondence; creating and implementing staff policies and procedures; ordering supplies and maintaining inventories; planning and coordinating staff training programs; acting on behavior of immediate supervisors in their absence and overseeing the maintenance and input in computerized maintenance and management systems.

5. Performs related duties as required.

Note: Employees are required to travel between facilities as needed and may be required to work nights, weekends (including support for special events) and/or holidays and may occasionally be directed to work at previously unscheduled times in case of an emergency. Employees may occasionally use their own vehicles in the performance of their duties and be reimbursed for mileage.


Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Six (6) years of experience operating, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, pumping, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration and related plant machinery and systems found in large industrial, production, commercial or institutional buildings; AND

2. Two (2) of those six (6) years must have been in a supervisory capacity directing the operation and maintenance activities of subordinate personnel; AND

License and Certifications:

1. Possession of a Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency for working with heating and ventilating equipment (HVAC) or other refrigeration equipment using CFCs and HCFCs; AND

2. Possession of a valid Class “C” Driver license.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with cCure or other security access control systems, CCTV systems
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems

Selection Procedure:

Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight 100%): Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire via email at the closing of the filing period. The Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation serves as the examination for this position and is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas. A passing score must be achieved on the Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation in order to continue in the selection process. Applicants will be given a deadline to return the Supplemental Questionnaire. Those who do not respond by the established deadline will not be eligible to continue in the examination process and will not be added to the eligibility list resulting from this process.

Eligible List/Score Report:

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law.

However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 6 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
