Machine Operator E

12-hour nights - 6:45 pm - 7:15 am (2/2/3 schedule)


This position works under the supervision of the Production Supervisor. Most areas of responsibility are reviewed on a daily basis. Direction is given daily.


Knowledge:

Use of elementary geometry, algebra, and trigonometric principles together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, table; various types of precision measuring instruments, ability to make minor modifications to NC/CNC equipment programs and the personal computer to input data, interpretation of data and measuring devices requiring advanced skills knowledge. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years of applied training in a particular or specialized occupation.


SAFETY
– Operators are expected to follow all safety programs established by the Company. They are responsible to operate all equipment in a safe manner and wear required personal protective equipment at all times.


TOLERANCE
– As close as .001


TOOLING
- Loading/unloading devices, scale, micrometer, optical comparator, metal cutting tooling, tapes, control panel, powerheads, multi-spindle head, in-process and post-process gauging equipment, wrenches, indicators, steady rests, auto orienting equipment, abrasive wheels, and/or belts, center tools, etc.


DUTIES:

  • Get bars of steel of varying weights from floor racks adjacent to the work centers, load machines, unload pieces from the machine bed, separate chips, count pieces, and place pieces in pans at the machine. Replace oil in machines, changes tooling. Setup and operate a group of cutoff machines on a variety of tools and sizes, working with average tolerances of .001 and over. Setups are exacting but sometimes difficult. Some tools are furnished ground, the operator must sharpen others. Plan operations sequence, select cams, tools, feeds, and speeds. Devise tooling setup to perform the operations, gage work, replace dull tools, worn wheels, and diamonds, diagnose and remedy operating and tooling difficulties. Inspect pieces as required.
  • Clean and/or wipe equipment. Fill lubricating and/or hydraulic oil reservoirs in machines. Keep limit switches clean. Perform daily routine maintenance. Responsible to avoid damage to tooling and material in process, to equipment, and maintaining production, quality, and safety. Manually count or weigh pieces. Enter production data into the computer. The operator is responsible to obtain tooling from the crib. Perform other duties assigned from time to time.
  • Must have the ability to explain machine problems in technical terms, have basic indexable insert cutting tool knowledge, know decimal relative values and orders of magnitude, comprehend multi-dimensional axes of motion, have basic cutting tool knowledge, make tool condition decisions, identify different types of cutting tools, know how to properly install tooling, identify and access different product programs, know how to access different individual program line blocks for data input and/or minor edits, keep tooling organized check parts for burrs and damage, visual inspect bar stock for proper size, have knowledge of tool geometries to perform machine operations, call up alarm descriptions and reference to manual, know machine interference limitations, and know individual machine code formats.
  • Must be able to understand blueprint projections and dimensions, extract data from print to set up the machine, follow written instructions, and enter and edit on a CRT.
  • The operator is responsible for making minor machine repairs to maintain productivity, such as relieving jams, changing coolant spouts, cleaning coolant pipes, changing and adjusting belts, and other minor repairs as assigned by the supervisor.


Experience:

  • Normal care is required in operating equipment or performing duties to prevent injury to others. An accident, should it occur, would result in lost time injuries such as severe fractures, loss of fingers or toes, eye injuries, or health hazards not incapacitating in nature.
  • Use of judgment to plan and make decisions as to the sequence of setups, operations, and processes, including minor modifications to pre-programmed computer routines within the limits of recognized or standard methods or practices.
  • Over 1 year up to and including 3 years.
  • Use of elementary geometry, algebra, and trigonometric principles together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, table; various types of precision measuring instruments, ability to make minor modifications to NC/CNC equipment programs and a personal computer to input data, interpretation of data and measuring devices requiring advanced skills knowledge. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years of applied training in a particular or specialized occupation.
  • Injuries, should they occur, would result in loss of time due to causes such as severe fractures, loss of fingers or toes, eye injuries, or some exposure to health hazards not incapacitating in nature.
  • Continuous mental and visual attention; usually repetitive work or diversified operations requiring constant alertness or activity.
  • Moderate physical demand with continuous lifting or moving lightweight material and very lightweight in difficult work positions. Frequent lifting or moving average weight. Occasionally lifting or moving heavier weight.
